62's sound as if they have too many mids.

I have a set of fender 62s in my alvarez strat copy, and they sound too middy. Its not so bad, but i would like them to cut through better. What would do the pearly gates plus justice? So far they have a load of twang, and they sound like stevie on tightrope. Sorry to sound like a jerk, but no rails or jb jrs please. Just good ol' fashion run of the mill single coils. :thanks:

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

the pearly gates plus is a full sized bucker, not a single coil. sorry, im confused

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

fender 57/62 pups are alnico v and about 5.6k, i dont think they are very middy at all. i would say they are quite scooped and lacking mid range

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

thanks benjy for clearing that up, they just don't cut through well enough for my liking. They sound really really fat.

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

wow, thats new and different for those pups. usually i think they sound pretty thin and wimpy.

i think the aps2 single coils are great punchy sounding pups but they are more middy than what you have now.

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

I honestly don't think that the 62's are too fat, I think they don't cut through in your Alvarez becausae they don't have enough upper mids and top end. That Alvarez is pretty dark sounding.

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

My experiences with them mirror Jermey's... though I wouldn't call them "wimpy" really. Clean & open... plenty of jangle and never too thick or even bordering on it.

The times I've swapped them with SSL-1's I've thought that the Duncans have MORE midrange...

Not sure what to say really...

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

Ok, well Im going to wait to see what they sound like when we play, but how do those new big dipper pups sound?

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

kinda similar to what you have now, classic scooped strat tone.

I want soemthing that will work with a dark sounding git box. What about the texas specials. Would they have more twang(I know that they will not sound remotly to stevie, he played the OG. 60's pups)? :scratchch

I dunno man...I get the feeling it's not the pickups. :scratchch

Generally, alnico 5 Strat pickups underwound to less than 6K are pretty bright and chimey...and not overly midrangey.

I get the feeling it's your set-up...do you have a great amp?

I play through a toneworks into a peavey minx(sounds scary close to a vox), and Im going to borrow my brothers bassman into a 2x12 vox. I doubt that its me though. My brother played it through his GT8 into his strawberry blonde in practice and it still was too dark.

Re: 62's sound as if they have too many mids.

Its the Peavey, the majority of Peavey amps (including their top of the line; JSX; Triple, 6505) are pretty midrange heavy and will usually not have a sparkly high end as their amps get cleaner. The Peavey Classics may be the exception to that. Peavey's heavier mids really shine on high gain.

....different amp - try something else.

Beyond the amp...well it narrows it down, but its not pups, unless you have them so low that their address is in Anartica.
