'63 Fender Reverb cable problem

I just upgraded an old stand-a-lone Fender reverb unit. Installed a newer three spring tank, new control knobs, and RCA cables. The cables that came with the unit were black plastic covered (not original vintage). I purchased new vintage style cables but had to cut to proper length and resolder the connects. After checking for proper continuity I plugged in these new cables and got little to no reverb. I tapped on the tank and got some reverb through the amp speaker, so I know the cables had to be working. So I plugged in the old plastic cables, and It sounds great. Why would I not get reverb from these new vintage style cables?

Re: '63 Fender Reverb cable problem

check the continuity between the working cables and the new ones. there is some difference. for each cable make sure there is basically no resistance between the tips, then make sure there is no connection between the tip and ring. my guess is thats where your problem is, something is making contact that shouldnt be

It's pretty easy to short out the plastic insulated inner conductor on a RCA plug while soldering the braid...I usually solder the braid first, then push the inner conductor in place and solder it. Have fun with that tank...that's the real deal. Wanna sell the old tank?

Yep, I did find a very slight bit of difference in the continuity between the old and new cables, though at first was hard to spot. Both cables don't usually mis-solder, but did in this case. I also thought it might have been a difference in the tolerances of the plugs, but that is not the case. I resoldered the cables, carefully this time, and now all is ok.

Thanks

The old tank is not original and is a real dog, and not worth selling. It's only worth trashing!

Enjoy !!! I found an old '64 just recently after going without for about ten years and there's nothing else even close...
