'64 (?) SG in the house

I've been really getting into P90s and specifically single pickup models, straight into a tube amp, lately. Something about the purity is really appealing to me at the moment, that Black Keys kind of vibe. So, I'd bumped a guitar and was on the lookout for something when I stumbled across this...she arrived last week and is amazing. Beat up to hell, lots of changed parts, but sounds like only an old girl who's been dragged through every smoky dive in the north of England for the past 40 years could...

Very sweet indeed!!! I love SG's, but struggle with the playing position. I guess I should just get one, and work on it! :D Congrats.

That is sweet mate! I had a RI Jr a few yrs ago. While it certainly does not have the mojo that yours has, I can say that I really dig the single P90 set up. Congrats!

My favorite part of your description: sounds like only an old girl who's been dragged through every smoky dive in the north of England for the past 40 years could...

It's worth the effort to get used to SG's thin bodies. Doesn't take long, then they're addictive. BTW, I rotate between 335's, LP's, SG's, deep hollowbodies, & a V, and they're all comfortable to me. Variety, the spice of life baby.

^if I ever win the lotto I'll buy you a Firebird, an Explorer and a 339 just so you'll have the whole family lol!

Re: '64 (?) SG in the house

Interesting. It's almost the same as one a family friend has (a '61) - tune-o-matic/stop tail installed; Grovers (with square plastic buttons, though); even had some sort of trapeze tailpiece at some point; loads of wear and crazy checking of the finish.

The large, extended neck tenon on these makes them the most stable SGs.

Yeah, I've been very pleasantly surprised by the tuning stability.

SG Jr - oh baby!!!!

Be very careful of the headstock as they tend to be easy to snap. Repairs are simple and common but no need to find that out first hand. What is the neck profile like? Is it a deep U shape or more the standard 60's Gibson?

Best of luck with it, it looks awesome and I am sure it sounds the same.

Deep U, not 50's baseball bat, but nice and chunky...and it's already had a break that has been repaired immaculately. That (and the aftermarket tuner, bridge etc.) is why I managed to pick it up for the same price as a MIM Tele.

Beautiful !! Congratulations ! There's something magical about a guitar that's managed to survive for so many years and is still good and playable....wondering about it's life and all the experiences it's been through..... I hope it travels through life with you for many happy years to come.

Thanks man...I know what you mean; I've owned 3 60s guitars before (Melody Maker, Mustang, LP) and while two had 'the' sound, none of them was really playable in a practical, giggable sense...this one is, and has the sound in spades.

I'm with you there, man. I've been doing the same with a P90 SG Classic into an AC30.

Great guitar, man. Enjoy!
