$649 for LP?

Les paul gurus.. Please tell me if this is a good deal...
1993 LP studio -black And is pretty light..
Duncan distortion and JB neck.
Sperzel keys.

Negatives are:
no pickguard. (I prefer the look this way, but it is something it should have)
pickup ring is cracked. Pup ring screws are rusty
quite a few dings and nicks, but no major gashes.
Alot of dings along the edge of the fretboard.

My feeling is that its a pretty good price for used Gibson, but I have a hard time parting with that kinda money period, let alone something kinda beat up..

Ive been saving for a LTD EC1000, but I may have to cure my LP lust first.
Please advise if I should look into this... Thanks!

I dont know a whole lot about LP's, but if it were me I wouldnt get it if it has dings and scratches all over it, even for that price. Like I said though, I dont know a whole lot about them, but that's just my two cents. :)

That's going rate, for the dings I'd offer $600 and see what happens. And 1993 was a good year for studios, late 80's early 90's good. Late 90's early 2000's they had the thinnner bodies and dot inlays - yuk.

If it was clean and near mint It would be a sweet deal. The pickups make it a little better, but not much. Cruise Ebay and youll find clean studios for 700 all day. I dont think Id pay 650 for a beat up studio. But....how does it play and sound, that could always steer me.

Make sure the frets don't need replacing. That will add an easy $200. I once bought a guitar at a great price, and the guy told me the frets were in "great shape." As it turned out, it was completely unplayable unless the action was set very high. The frets were worn to the point where leveling wasn't an option. Always look for those hidden expenses.

If there's one place I can't stand nicks, it's on the neck or the edge of the fretboard... take that into consideration as well. I'd definitely go cheaper with the condition you're stating. Maybe you should save up some more money and get a better one?

If it is a pawn shop, try to deal with them, most times if your serious and dont act like a 8 year old learning what wonders his "thingy" can do, youll find that you can get a good discount at a pawn shop. My 92 Studio was in a shop for 999 and I went in a few times a week and looked around got to talking to the owner, bought a few things here and there. After 3 months he dropped it to 699. I walked in and played it and left, next week I came in. looked and left. The next week, He says "so, whats it gonna take for you to buy that Les Paul?"....I said, 300 out the door....He went and got me the case and I was the owner of a fine Les Paul Studio.

personally, go with a new ec-1000. this guitar has a lot of dings and nicks, which in the neck and fretboard could make it allmost unplayable.

dont go with the gas, get something you will enjoy for a while to come.

I bought my Washburn Dimebag siggy this way. It was $980 when I discovered it. A few days later, I walked out the door with it for under $400. Then I got it signed by Damageplan that night. :D

An EC-1000 is not even in the same ballpark as a Les Paul studio, having owned 4 EC-1000's I can tell you while they are great guitars, they will not deliver the tone of a Les Paul. They are Les Paul shaped and that's where the similarities end.

well, i can get basically the tone of a lp with my ec-1000 with some changes in the tone nobs and some amp stuff........

also, i would personally rather have a new good guitar that i know nothing is wrong with over a guitar than is beat to crap...hehe


also, arent you on the esp-ltd boards as a mod! lol :rolleyes: :laugh2:

Please forgive my pessimism, but I doubt that seriously. Like I said, I've owned four of them, and numerous Les Pauls from studios, standards, customs, specials, and custom shop. IMO nothing does Les Paul tone like a Les Paul. The EC-1000 is made from a thin mahogany laminate with a paper thin veneer top for aesthetics, not even a maple cap, and a thick poly (read plastic) coating. While the Les Paul is a thick chunk of solid mahogany, 1 1/4 inch maple cap that truly affects tone, and nitrocellulose paint. I stand by my statement that the EC-1000 is shaped like a Les Paul, but that's it. nothing else about the features, build, or materials is remotely close.

I bought a black '95 Studio on ebay that is in exc. cond. w/Gibson HSC for $650. I put another $120 into it for Duncan Humbuckers in place of the stock pups. The one you're looking at already has SD's in it, which is a plus. You're probably looking at $30 - $40 for the pickguard, ring, and some new screws.
It all comes down to if you can live with the guitar or not. If so, offer $600 for it. The pickups are worth $90 - $100 alone.
I really like mine after putting a good set-up on it. Great Pauly tones, plays nice....it really satisfied the hunger in me for that sound
....for now....lol
Great guitar....whether you buy this one or another like it....Studios rock!

Right on, brudda, right on!!

I think the studio sounds just like a Classic or Standard....it just doesn't have the trim is all the difference really. I find the rosewood neck on mine to be smooth and fast. With the good SD pickups and a John S. modded TS-9 the guitar has no problem sustaining for as long as I need it.
I'm glad I bought one.

Its at a guitar shop and on consignment, so price negotiation is not an option.

Fret wear is apparant, but still pretty good.

It plays and sounds pretty good, just tattered. Its hard to decide where to draw that line between broken in and too much wear.
Ive seen some abused axes and this one just looks very played. The dings on the sides of the fret board concern me the most. HOWEVER, Im thinking this is normal..?? My Explorer was factory fresh and had ripples in the side of the fretboard..
Quite abit of filler around the inlays too. more than on my Epi
