6505 Power Tube Distortion

Hey guys... I was wondering what would happen if you cranked the post gain on a 6505 and left the pre gain low. Would I get power tube distortion? Thanks.

Re: 6505 Power Tube Distortion

Are you referring to this on the Red CH, the Green CH, or both? I guess the simple answer is yes, it's a 6505 so your getting some degree of power tube distortion almost constantly???

My normal setting for my 6505 is a lot like what you've described. I pretty much always stay on the Green CH with the pre-gain set to about 3-4, the post-gain turned up relatively high, (the amp will let you know when you have the volume right) & I've got a EQ pushing it just a little. This setting is perfect for me because I get a great crunchy, slightly distorted, clean tone that's extremely dynamic and takes a verity of pedals extremely well, either in front or through the effects loop....

Re: 6505 Power Tube Distortion

Not really - the stock non-adjustable bias has a pretty low output tube wattage dissipation - meaning the power amp stays relatively clean; most of the gain on that amp comes from the preamp, and what you hear when you turn it up is a change of EQ perception. If you modify the circuit, you could definitely get a lot more power amp distortion without too serious of drawbacks (somewhat shortened tube life is one, but I think it more or less comes down to manufacturer quality; keep spares).

Re: 6505 Power Tube Distortion

I think your insides sort of come out and stay there. Like a sock during laundry or something.

I've played a 6505+ stack with the master up to 8 and I have no clue what sort of stage you have to be playing at to ever need that.

Local bar, etc. ;)
