undefinedundefined Can anyone tell me why a 1968 Gibson LP Standard costs more then the 68 Custom I always heard that customs were built with better tonewoods and electronics. New to the vintage game..... :smack:

Well, can't help with the toe jam, but I play a '70 LP Standard I bought new ( a long time ago...) and it still remains one of the finest playing and sounding guitars I've ever played. My Nashville buddies kept borrowing it for sessions because it sounded so good. Not really sure why it's so nice, but it is, and beats the hell out of any Custom I've ever played. Maybe fancying something up wrecks its integrity...

I can't tell you either, except most guys I know (myself included) would much rather have a standard than a custom ... I don't think the custom sounds as alive for some reason ... like there is something missing in the mids or something, The standard has a complexity in the tone that I just don't hear in a custom ... I generally hate the customs, plus I like that rosewood finger board over ebony anyway, and those trapezoid markers over those blocks, just a cosmetic quirk of mine.

Like with everything, "supply and Demand". The supply of 70s Standards isn´t enough to cover the demand, therfore the higher asking price. 70s customs on the other hand nobody seems to want, therefore the "usually lower) price

BTW Zerberus, isn't there a difference in the top or cap of the customs vs. the standards ... I heard that one time, but I don't know, never seen one stripped down ... You got any info on that as to the actual construction ... errr materials differences? Thanks.

Many LP Customs from that era have the fretless wonder frets...ground almost flat. I hate those frets. Also most have ebony figerboards with big pearl inlays and double bound bodies. Most players don't want that look...they like the look of the standard models. So it comes down to supply and demand. There's more demand for the standards. That's about it... Lew
