69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

Hi everyone,

I just picked a 69 Fender Super Reverb yesterday. Everything is original to the best of my knowledge. (except the tubes I'm pretty sure)

Here is the problem, before I bought it yesterday I played my R9 through it and the reverb and the vibrato worked great.

I take it home last night after it sat at the guys house all day and the REVERB stopped working. Vibrato still works fine.

When I turn the reverb up to 10 you can kind of here a little reverb. But its definatley not where it should be especially at 10!!! I had to keep the reverb slightly under 3 yesterday when it was working to make it sound nice to me.

The pedal connections seem fine. I opened the bottom of the old pedal and the connections seem fine inside. I dont know how to check the connection to the reverb tank though.

Can anyone shed some light on what may be causing my reverb to not work?

Thanks.

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

A common problem with these is the reverb cables---check the cables where they plug into the chassis at the reverb jacks. Are they the original cables or a cheap set of stereo RCA's?
Did they get reversed? Switch the leads at the chassis...
The ground connection (outside shield on the RCA cable) gets a little loose sometimes...make sure they are making a good connection.
Try a known good set of RCA cables (a stereo set will work fine for test purposes)...
if that's not it, swap V4 for a known good 12AX7/7025...

Check your driver tube. Looking at the back of the amp from L to R it will be the 3rd tube from the right and a 12AT7. The 12AX7 to the left of it also is your reverb recovery tube. It could be the problem as well. Change em' all if you have the cash.:)

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

Thanks so much you guys.

I have it in my car waiting to go see Doc in Fountain Valley, CA.

He'll get me all fixed up untill I can learn how to do it on my own.

I appreciate your help! I'll check back in when its fixed up.

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

my friend murali uses a '69 sr and it sounds really nice, its a good year for supers!

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

It's actually a good idea to take it to the tech, and have him check the circuit, lube the pots, replace any questionable components like old caps, and retube and bias it. It'll be like having a new 69 SR. It may cost a little bit of money, but it'll be good to go for another 10 or 40 years.

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

It worked! Thanks for the help!

Just went home for lunch and replaced the SUPER OLD 12AT7 and also the 12AX7 right to the left of it.

The reverb is working but now the foot switch will not turn on/off the reverb. The footswitch DOES turn the vibrato on/off though.

Any suggestions?

Also,

Thanks.

What is fair market price for a 69 Super Reverb in good condition?

Just curious. I'm wondering if I got a smokin deal or just a normal deal.

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

I paid $1575.00 Canadian for a '65 Super Reverb.
Edit: I didn't realize that a '69 is a SF..this would be a factor.

Bought it from our local amp. tech. It was his own, and he kept the electronics in great shape. It is not original (e.g., new tranformer, one speaker was reconed, new (aged) grill cloth.

Great amp.....as long as you don't need to move it very often.

Enjoy your new amp !!

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

sounds like the RCA plug on the reverb side might be bad...because of the right angle on the cable, these things get a lot of wear and tear when they bump up against something. Try a shorted RCA plug to see if it turns off the 'verb...then get a new plug put on the footswitch cable. As far as 'market value' on SFSR's, it's been coming down for the last few years in favor of the smaller combos (you could pay more for a nice Princeton Reverb or a Deluxe Reverb). Good score---fix it up and it may last another 35 years.

I'll give the rca plug a try.

Thanks again!!

Re: 69 Fender Super Reverb... help!

I paid $1000 after taxes and a recone for my 1970 Super Reverb...but having that little 6 in the third number slot does *wonders* for the value of old Fender amps :)

Oh yeah-that is clean. And you still have the CTS alnicos and the wiring harness...it's getting harder to find them like that anymore. Congrats...
