6BM8--is it an EL84 or EL82?

I asked if the 6BM8 was an EL 84 a while back and got a response of yes from a lot of people. However, I looked inside another old Univox U45-B amp I have and on the tube is stamped 6BM8/EL82. I'm a bit confused now.

the el84 is a 6BQ5, so the el82 sounds more reasonable but i dont know for sure

According to the RCA Recieving Tube Manual, a 6BM8 is the same as an ECL82 which I'm assuming is the same as an EL82.

6BM8; used a lot in 60's Japanese TV's, but kinda scarce and expensive now...EL 82 (pentode) is a different tube from the ECL 82/6BM8 (has a pentode and triode section). And no---you can't sub an EL 84 without rewiring the socket and a few other things.

You know what? It's a 6BQ5 in my other amp that instigated my first question a few weeks ago. This other one has the 6BM8. See? I'm quite confused, LOL.

This from my 1975 Sylvania Tube Data Manual: The 6BM8 is the same as the ECL82. It's a combined triode (approximately the same as half a 12AT7) and an output pentode (similar to but lower-powered than an EL84). Marshall used them in the 18 Watter's baby brother, the model 1930 "Popular" combo amp. In push-pull they're good for 10 watts a pair. Your little Univox probably gives up about 4 watts.

Last time I heard, the ECL82 was in production. If not, they're easily obtained on eBay.

Edit: Bingo! TubeDepot.com has NOS, plus new Sovtek and Electro-Harmonics 6BM8's available. Now, if they'd only reissue my precious ECL86...
