6CA7s vs JJ E34Ls

Re: 6CA7s vs JJ E34Ls

JJ also has a new EL34 out called the EL34II. It's supposed to fall between the standard 34 and the E34L. It might be just enough difference to get you where you want to go without leaving the EL's you like so much. I think I'm going to put a set in my DSL 50.

Re: 6CA7s vs JJ E34Ls

You are correct that the EH version is a beam tetrode like a 6L6GC, but that's basically because it is a tweaked 6L6GC, and it really sounds like it.

The original Sylvania 6CA7 is also a beam tetrode, supposedly based on their 6550.

The JJ version seems to be reviewed most favorably to the original Sylvania. A lot of people say it's close, but a tad warmer in the mids. I've been pretty happy with my JJs. They do what they say. They have the bottom end of a 6L6GC with the mids and top of an EL34. Cranked in a Marshall 1959-type circuit they definitely have an EVH vibe with chewy mids and a nice solid bottom end. Match them up with the right speakers and you'd nail that.

As far as what the OP wants, the EH version might actually be better for him. I'm not sure what Lynch's amps came with, but some US-import Marshalls did come stock with 6550s from the distributor, so it depends on what amp Lynch had and when he got it.

Looking at original Sylvania and GE 6CA7s, the EH 6CA7 is an exact copy right down to the unique round holes in the plates. They don't sound like a 6L6GC or a 6550 to my ears. They are much more EL34 sounding than 6L6 or 6550 sounding. But compared to a skinny bottle EL34 they certainly have more headroom and more open mids, as well as a more solid bottom. The 6CA7 sound is its own sound. There is that EL34 silkyness though.

Re: 6CA7s vs JJ E34Ls

I have been using a JJ's 6CA7 in my Picovalve of late. Liking the low end and the low mids along with the EL34 type top end. Nice harmonics.

Swapped it from the KT-88 I had in it previously.

Re: 6CA7s vs JJ E34Ls

Lynch uses JJE34L's
JJ pre's can be dark and almost neuter tone controls

Try a CP TungSol and Mullard 12ax7 in the V1 & V2 to see if it changes enough for you

I also hate Matched Cathod Followers

So, here is the link to the recording of the rig that is in my sig below, i think CS9 was on one of the two tracks, no on board additives, just eq. I am 85% happy with the tone, i just want the bass to be a bit brighter and the over all tone just a bit more chewy/chimey and a bit brighter, almost like with a variac on i guess ??? you dont have to listen the entire "epic masterpiece", at 2:22 you will hear both, lead & Rhythm under one minute.

It appears that Tung Sol's E34Ls are kind of there but there is only one link of them on youtube in a relative circuit amp - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7-Kp4Md1E4 does anybody have more ?

will check out JJ EL34II

Re: 6CA7s vs JJ E34Ls

I have an amp with 6CA7s actually. Non-brand, kind of a custom vintage marshall build. I can indeed vouch for the massive yet tight low end and El34ish midrangey texture. Very clean power section.

Re: 6CA7s vs JJ E34Ls

Más información, por favor.

On the amp? Sorry been busy. The preamp is a 3x 12ax7 deal. Bassman/early Marshall kind of thing. 50w bass middle treble presence master volume. The transformer is from an old Musicman amp, some of which ALSO used to have 6CA7 power tubes in them stock. Yeah the thing is damn loud clean and bassy. It's not a clone of anything really. It was built and wired locally by a guy named Livari. He makes them as kind of a labor of love/hobby kind of thing.
