6G3 Brown Deluxe...

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

These are great sounding amps. Any ideas of what a good price for a clean used model would be? I've been seeing $2200-$2500...but I've only seen a couple lately.

No clue. They got real high off a while but they came down a little.

If expect 2500-3000 right now.

I loved mine, BUT..Almost sold it, due to the head room issue you speak about. An old tech, hear in Nashville, advised trying a 12ay7 in V1 and guaranteed, I would not sell it after I tried that..It's now my go to for every style, I play..Blackface type cleans all the way up to 5 on the volume dial..And all the overdrive it had before, past 6. No audible volume drop in output either..12ay7 is what fender put in there factory tweed deluxes in the late 50's. Not sure why not in the brown face deluxe. My goodness, what an amp.

To me, a brown Deluxe with the right speaker has a tone that is more like the idealized Marshall tone that I hear in my head than either a blackface Deluxe or tweed Deluxe has.

But it doesn't really sound like a vintage Marshall - it's not nearly so bright and crunchy as a vintage Marshall. It sounds like what my interior mental version of a vintage Marshall sounds like rather than a real Marshall.

Smoother. Chewier. Browner. Snarlier. But without the sizzling upper treble and presence control of a vintage Marshall.

When turned up to at least 5 it's a very cool, sort of midrangey, somewhat snarly sound that's great for soloing and grindy ZZ Top style rhythm guitar.

However, the brown Deluxe is not able to get clear enough for my style of playing which is blues based but which uses a lot of jazz and complex chords. My blackface Deluxe Reverb (with a Celestion speaker) is a better match for my style of playing.

I love brown Deluxes though!

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

I had a Brown Deluxe that a friend had put a Vox Celestion Silver Alnico in, and it wailed. So maybe try a Weber Silver Alnico if you want to try that sound. Sounded Marshallish, especially pushed with an OD pedal. Wish I had never let it go!. Enjoy it.

The fix for the early break up, of the brownie is a 12ay7 in v1..Learned that little trick, From amp guru, Jeff Bakos..You get cleans up to 3; gritty cleans all the way up to 5 on the volume dial. Past 5 it reacts basically the same as stock 12ax7, nice and filthy. It made it perfect for blackface vibe up to 5, and tweedy vintage marshall tones, from there to 10. Best amp I own for sessions/and small stages, and still is too loud for some sound guys..Nashville Tn. from
