6G3 Brown Deluxe...

6G3 Brown Deluxe...

I emailed weber and they gave me three options. One was the 12F150 that is more a blackface deluxe reverb mainstay. The 2nd was a 12F150B (British cone "for more chime, less sparkle" and the 12A125A which "I think" is more period correct. I've read of guys dropping various celestions in with pleasing results. Interpretations of this amp sonically seem to point towards a more "Marshall like" distortion, hence folks sticking celestions in. Not sure where to go on this. But Mojo is now offering a 6G3 chassis and soon a replica 1x12 that fits. Can't pass up the chance to give it a whirl. Mojo wants to use tweed deluxe transformers. Probably pretty close, but mercury has their actual brownface cloned versions.

Which brand (color) coupling caps does your original have in it, Christian? Gotta gut shot you can share?

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

the last one I played had a g12h30 and it sounded awesome, its very much a idealized marshall tone. I played one that had a red fang speaker that was really cool as well but didn't get to do a full gig with it.

Christian, do you use both channels or just the bright?

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

I was thinking doing a couple of Dumble mods to the normal channel I've been reading about

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

Hard to go wrong with a G12H30 in anything.

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

Guys, I'm about to build one. Christian, which Weber would you go with? 12A125A seems the logical choice based on weber descriptions, bit I've not played this amp.

I put a 12A125A in my Tweed Deluxe clone and it sounds killer now broken in. High output /effiency. Thing freaks me out on 2 sometimes.

Personal opinion the Weber 12F150 is too much speaker for that amp...if you wanted to go American ceramic the 125 is a "better" call IMO.

Caps... Plain old blue Mallory's. Mine is not mint or anything, it's a player amp and there might be a cap or two changed. It's been a long time since I had it open but for the most part its a sea if blue Mallory's in there.

I like Celestions in mine. Greenback, Alnico G12,etc...currently a Weber 1230-55.

I want to try the 75Hz H30 in mine one day.

I use the bright channel 99% of the time but I often blend in the normal channel for added fatness.

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

Also of note on the speaker front the demos I posted a few weeks ago were all done with my Deluxe on a plain old G12T75 loaded Marshall 4x12 and if I may be so bold the tone rips!!

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

IMO, the 1230-55 hits the spot in the brown deluxe. I just did not care for the 12A125A.

That being said, I do not push my amps very hard and I tend to lean towards blackface Fender tones. I do like a good Marshall clean tone though.

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

im having weber recone a blown vintage 30 as a g12h30-55 so ill be able to compare the two speakers shortly, even if it isn't a proper 55, it should give me an idea the difference.

the g12h30-55 is not a fendery speaker at all, sounds great in fender amps but isn't classic fender tone in the least

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

Christian and I did some Brownface sampling a while back at my house. He brought over his Deluxe and I had the Vibrolux and Princeton. These were all very different sounding, yet very similar. We even ran C's Deluxe through the Vibrolux cab which was my personal favorite of the night.
Just thought I'd add some eye candy to this thread:

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

Very cool line up. How are yours set up speakers, Greg?

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

Cool!!!

That was a fun time.

Greg's Vibrolux had the stock Oxford speaker and the Princeton has a 10 inch Greenback.

My Deluxe sounded much cleaner and clearer with the Oxford, the 1230-55 has a nasty midrange to it that's killer but it is a bit crunchy for some guys.

Cool! Post your findings when you get it.

It's a cool speaker if you like gritty punch!

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

I already have a g12h30 and really like that, just wanted to see what the bass version does

Re: 6G3 Brown Deluxe...

These are great sounding amps. Any ideas of what a good price for a clean used model would be? I've been seeing $2200-$2500...but I've only seen a couple lately.
