6v6 amp owners, wussup

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

i run my dr with the bass on 3 :) i was out in california a few weeks ago and a '66 princeton reverb was the amp i ended up using at the gigs since i couldnt travel with an amp. it was a good little amp but sounded alot smaller than the dr im used to.

ive thought about making a deeper cab for the dr recently actually

It's obviously not as loud, but it does sound a lot 'wider' to me - the EQ controls have a better range to them and stomp boxes sound a heck of a lot beeter through the PRRI than they do the DRRI, even with all the mods we've done to ours.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

i usually only use timmy as far as pedals.

the pr did sound good, just not as meaty as my dr which has seen plenty of mods and the pr was pretty stock as far as i know. the pr might sound wider, but i think the (or at least my) dr sits really well in the mix.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

haven't clipped my bright cap yet.

If my vol. is below 3 for home practice, I keep the treble at just under 3 and the bass at 7 for cleans or 3-4 for dirt pedals.

Getting the volume up allows me to raise the treble accordingly. I really don't mind the bright cap, it takes me like 2 seconds to just work around it. Changing to the Emi Texas Heat helped there, too.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

I am going to convert my Hot Rod DeVille 212 to 6V6 here soonish.

I will report back. It should make it more of the amp I want it to be.

If it doesn't, I always have those bold 6L6 Fender cleans to fall back on.

But, on paper, a 30 watt-ish 3 channel 2x12 amp with lots of bass and mids and grunt sounds like a lot of fun.

sounds like it's gonna be very, very awesome.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

princetons (with the exception of the PRII - that has a 12) only have a 10 inch speaker....thats why DR's sound fatter.
PRIIs also have diode rectifiers....so tons more bass and punch than a regular princeton.
I have a silverface princeton here too thats been converted to didode rectification and now it puts out around 20watts as opposed to the 12 it used to have.
I dont know what rectifiers the new reissues have, but that makes a big difference as well as the 10 inch speaker.

I was THIS close } {
to buying a PRRI instead of a DRRI. I think they both rule, but I figured I would get the one with the bigger cab and speaker, just cuz I want the thing to really roar when I crank it.
It certainly does.

On that note, today I finally got to drag my amp to my mom's house where I can get up to gig volumes. Plugged straight in, turned the vibrato channel up to 7, and just about busted a nut. It's so smooth and clear, but nice and gritty when you hit it hard. I had the treble on 4 and contemplated turning that up. Even after everything I've read about DR's, and all the clips, and even playing it on 7 though an attenuator, it's amazing how much thicker the amp gets when opened up.

I really like 6v6s. They can handle more bass than el84s but they compress more than 6L6s. Sounds like a winner for blues rock, IMO

1965 Fender Vibro Champ

VCKlon.jpg

I love this pic, mostly because the Klon is a permanent fixture in my tonal life, because it does one thing better than any other.....making an amp sound like itself, cranked up with more gain than it has.

And what a great amp to throw a Klon in front of!
A Fender with a singing lead tone.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

Very awesome sir. Those amps can sound pretty big if you let them.
I had an hour with a SF bronco amp a while back. Turning it up to 10 made me realize how crappy my SCXD was at the time. No comparison.

The Klon is a friend's, not mine - I liked it, but only into certain amps and really only with my neck pickup for clean stuff. The buffer just screws with my rig too much. He loves it into his Marshalls though.

That Vibro Champ is a clean machine - doesn't really break up until I get it up around 7 and then its more growl than sing. Sounds like a mini Twin on tape.

You know a Bronco is just a rebadged Vibro Champ, right?

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

Howdy,

I'm crazy about my '68 Vibro Champ, with it's re-issue Jensen AlniCo speaker. I've also got NOS glass in her. Fantastic amp, nevermind the tremolo!

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

I've had a Savage Macht 12x, Swart AST, and currently have a 66 Princeton Reverb and a PRRI for beatin' around the house so to speak. All had great tone but were totally different. I think of BF fenders when I hear 6v6-namely the PR and DR. I always overlook the Deluxe 5e3. The Savage and AST had quite a bit more mids than the BF-especially the AST-perhaps accentuated by the Greenback speaker. Anyway, all do have that nice mid grind- a smoother slightly more compressed drive tone to them. I like the upper mid and treble with single coils. think of that sparkly surf ballad stuff that you can get with really any BF fender, but I love my Princetons. My 66 has original RCA tubes in them and is totally stock. It sounds richer, deeper and has more harmonics than the PRRI-I', about to drop a Weber 10F150T into it to replace the oxford and I hope it'll sound better still.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

And yes, Gearjoneser, the Klon is great with all of those amps. Love mine! Actually one of my best ever tones for blues/rock was with my tele and that Macht 12x cranked up with a klon and slide guitar. One of those few moments of nirvana that I just can't recapture...go figure.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

I have a DR. 1968 I think. I almost gave up on it due to the lack of headroom. I wound up putting a Vintage 30 (British made) in it & it solved a large amount of the headroom issues. Its a really great amp for blues & rock. Many people think of the DR as a clean amp, but in my experience I think they are a good crunchy sounding amp at low volume. They are great for playing bars & small venues but once the room gets to hold 500+ people its a little small unless you mike it.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

The Rev and Rick Neilsen are both big DR fans.

My Tweaker has 6V6's in it, love the amp
