6v6 amp owners, wussup

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

5e3, Gretsch 6150 and Tweaker are three that stay here. They just sound good and play responsively.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

I just started a thread about the Bogner Mojado. I never even heard of this amp, but after playing through it at GC yesterday, I figured I should have it.

I've had several el84, el34 and 6l6 amps. I've never been satisfied with the el84 amps I've had. They all seemed less "open" than what I like. I just figured I was a big tube kinda guy. Love the tones of my bf Dual Showman and El34 Shiva. I've never had a 6v6 amp. I've only dinked around on the PRRIs and DRRIs at GC, but was never thrilled with them. The Egnater Rebel and Tweaker didn't do much for me, either.

Enter the Mojado: a bare bones 2x6v6, 2x12ax7 amp with a volume knob and a 4-way "schizo" switch, that basically changes the tone and gain, in very small increments. It also has a "power amp in" to use for recording or in a wet/dry rig. I don't know how much of the sound is Bogner, and how much is the 6v6s. The amp can sound chimey clean and slight breakup like the Vox Ac15, juicy crunchy tones I've never had before, to all out rock like I wish the Class 5 had been. I take the Mojado home on Monday, so I'll be joining the 6v6 amp owner's club then.

Edit: I will say that I have always been intrigued by the 5E3 circuit, and would like to play and maybe build one some day.

Re: 6v6 amp owners, wussup

hey now, this thread turned out really good, thank ya very kindly! (prolly cuz I stayed out of it!)

I've been getting happy fingers by blending a dual 6v6 & a dual el84 in stereo, with a ping-pong delay going back and forth between them. Lots of sweet spots for lots of crunches at lots of volumes. Each amp is fun by itself, too, straight in with no pedals. So much flexibility. But blending the 6v6 beef with the el84 glassy bucket of nails sound is yielding some cool-o-phonic fonzie-sonics.

I will be throwing a 10" Red Fang into the above mix. I owned a Dr. Z Monza for a while with one of those in it and the hype sounded valid to my ears to say the least.
