6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

Stevo

Tonus Maximus Pacificas
I want to get a great raw-cranked sound without leveling my house with my plexi. If I can't find the right amp then I'll just rebuild my house to handle my amp :naughty:

Looking for cross between plexi and blackface sound, approx 20 watts, single channel, no master volume, no reverb. Sort of like a single channel 1974 with 6V6 power tubes. Does it exist? :28:

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

you could toss a set of 6v6 in the plexi. It will be a bit punchier, lower gain, and have a bluesier character, but will sound good. You will need to run a newer 6v6, JJs have a nice 6v6 offering thaat can take the plate voltage.

Outside of that, A 6v6 or El84 Traynor Bassmate are the shiz, 20 watts of knock yer teeth out. Still sit in the 300-400 range, which is an absurd bargain. If you hit my page, the 1st tune playing, 6 $$$ Trick is all done with my 69 EL84 Bassmate.

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

I prefer the 6V6 Bassmate to the EL84 version but they just reissued the EL84 version in a PTP package...looks cool!

Anyway...not sure about the single channel deal as most of those style amps will have 2 channel's...not channel switching but just 2 channels...if you want a 6V6 based Marshall look at the Reinhardt MI-6...it's a 20 watt Marshall tweaked to run a pair of 6V6's and is a killer amp.

Another amp you might want to look into is a plain old tweed Deluxe...killer raw grind right there.

If you really want to go to the top contack Bruce at Mission Amps and ask about his new V-Lux...it's a 20 watt, single channel amp with on board tremolo (that is amazing!) it has 3 inputs and a volume and tone control plus the 2 controls for the tremolo it's a 1x12 combo thats the same size as a tweed Deluxe but it kicks a tweed Deluxe square in the teeth...I did some beta testing for Bruce and I thought it kicked a 18/20 watt Marshall in the teeth! Amazing amp for sure!

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

Ahh great info. Thanks guys. I will check in to the suggestions :) Single channel is not mandatory, I am just looking for simplicity.

Kevin I had no idea I could put 6V6 tubes in my plexi! I will investigate that. Love your tune, too. I recognize it from tips and clips, some time ago. I now remember when you were touting the Laney too.

Asking for a plexi meets blackface is like asking for a pickup truck crossed with a roadster --- it's a large gap.

I say look at the smaller manufacturers --- look at Fargen, Weber, Ceriatone, et al.

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

Have you checked out Airline?

I have one..I just sent it in to get fixxed and actually get a guitar speaker put in it..

I think it is 6v6 ..It has 2 channels with 2 inputs on each channel but each cahnnel has in indepentant volume and no master.

Has footswitchable tremello too.

Nice amp..I am eager to get it back and really check it out. (Previously had used it with makeshift junk non-guitar voiced speakers...but was still awesome. Most people compare to a fender but darker. THough, its tone knob has very large range. I'd see if you can find one to check out.. I beleive its in the wattage range you're looking for.

Actually my Risson ETA 100 is exactly that, I channel Superlead one channel Blackface...... While not sonically exact, the vibe is definately there.

I've never heard one but the Fuchs Blackjack 21 specs look good.

"The Blackjack 21™ brings the high build quality and awesome tones people expect from Fuchs products to a new more affordable price range. The Blackjack 21™ has a classic rock voice similar to a vintage Marshall® or Trainwreck® style amp, but with a more manageable power level. Its tone provides a cutting rock edge, filled with harmonic richness and chime."

Also, the Lucky 7 runs on a single EL34.

And if single EL34 amps appeal to you, Reeves is having a sale on the 10 watt High Gain version (although it is a MV design).

I owned a 10 watt single EL34 amp and the bugger was loud. I was glad it had power scaling.

And there's always The Ultimate Attenuator that prople seem to rave about.

I love the Fender Princeton Reverb. Cranked up it's got a great bark and bite that is reminicent of a Plexi to me, but dial it back and it's much more Fender-esque. I need to send it to Bruce to be modded, I can only imagine how much cooler it will be then.

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

Thundertweak Rat Rod... 2x6V6 for 20 watts. Like a tweed deluxe with a lowered suspension and huge headers... totally overpowered pure rock & roll. Single channel, no frills... has *****in' graphics to match the tone!

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

Hi Stevo!

For tone v money spent the Mission 5E3 is hard to beat. It is it's own thing, even among tweed amps, so it's not my first choice when going after 'blackface' or 'marshall'. But that 5E3 thing is pretty awesome.

I have found that I can nudge my 5E3-based Victoria Double Deluxe in a Marshall direction with careful choice of speakers: G12T75s give it a mid scoop and treble extension that mate well with the thick midrange of the DD. I've had similar results by using a cab with a G12H30 and a V30 with a Swart AST. Dunno if that helps...

it may be worth looking at a Brown deluxe or a clone, as well, as that amp has a rep for being very Marshally for a fender. A friend of mine is building one soon, and I can't wait to hear it...

and check yer pms...

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

6v6 based amps like the deluxe reverb or princeton are generally associated with cleaner/bassier fender type tones. For a cranked low wattage marshall (midrangey & driven) style sound then an el84 based amp will get you closer. HAve a look at Ceriatone - the 18watt TMB model is lovely. Class A power. plenty of drive and "Marshally" tones at a useable level.

EL84 Marshall-style amps have their charms, but by far the most authentically 'mini plexi' sounding low-wattage amps I've heard have been 6V6 equipped. EL84s get close, but they'll always sound like Marshall 18 rather than a small plexi.

I got outbid on a very nice Traynor Bassmate :28:

Hiya bro! Thanks for the tip on Mission Amps. I now recall the discussion about these in that past. Lew's brother, right? The 5E3 style circuit is certainly a contender, considering what I am looking for. Great price too. I am definitely hot on the idea...

I currently have, and love, my plexi reissue and definitely use my Mass attenuator with it. It sounds pretty good as long as you play loud enough to push the speaker a bit.

Thanks for the links, those are nice sounding amps.

Re: 6V6 amps or kits with minimal mucky muck?

FYI the new 15 watt Marshall Haze amp uses 6V6 power tubes and it is very Marshally :D
