I just got into playing 7-strings (bought a used Ibanez RG 7620 some days ago). also, I'm still planning a custom guitar. I had pretty much settled on a Dimebucker for bridge and a Fullshred for neck (both splitable).
now if I would decide to get a 7-string-version of that custom, what options do I have PU-wise?
I play metal and want an extreme, but clear and articulate sound.
I like the dimebucker very much in my other guitar, so is there a 7-string PU with simmilar sound?
for the neck-position I want something thats good for lead-playing under high gain (lets say not too hot, but hot enough lol and not too bassy) with a split function and a good clean-sound at the same time (just love single-coil clean tone).
I have no experience with the Fullshred I had planned in for the custom, but soundfiles and descriptions sounded like what I'm searching for. havent I heard about a 7-string version of that PU?
I'm trying to stay away from active PUs for some reason, but if EMGs are what I'm searching for: why not give them a try...
what would you suggest? (its all pretty hypothetic still, as I dont know yet if I will stick with the 7th string)
another thing: I thought about getting the guitar with neck-thru construction, maple neck, ebony fretboard and mahogany wings (and a Floyd if that matters). thought the mahogany might add a little warmth to the aggressive edge of the dimebucker and therfore fit well with it (do you think this will work??).
do you think mahogany will sound TOO warm (bassy, muddy) in a 7-string?
