Hi Strat guitarists
I have a cool Fender Strat (American Standard, made in the U.S.). I first had a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails pickup in the neck position and the original Strat pickups in the middle and neck positions.
I then wanted to turn my guitar into a real fiery axe and added a Hot Rails pickup (neck position) and a Jeff Beff Jr (middle position) - a selection which I discovered to be the Dave Murray recipe: http://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/dave-murray-loaded-pickguard
Now I have added a simple toggle switch with three lugs to get that "7-way Stratocaster wiring mod" as presented by Breja ToneWorks on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BviWAfQxFy4). Prior to getting that 3-lug toggle switch I tried one with two lugs, which did not work!
Here's what I had to change:
- solder together the white and red wires of each pickup (making them humbuckers and excluding any splitting options)
- run green and silver wires of all pickups to ground
- run the black wire of each pickup to the selector switch
- rewire and solder according to wiring diagramme of Breja ToneWorks as shown on YouTube (see link above)
- add a simple toggle switch with three lugs (which I placed between the volume and first tone pot)
- connect lug Nr. 8 of selector switch with lug Nr. 2 of toggle switch (middle lug)
- connect lug Nr. 1 (top) of toggle switch with lug Nr. 3 of volume pot
- Toggle switch: Please note that it may not be clear which one is the Nr. 1 lug so you may have to try either lugs next to the one in the middle.
My Strat now has seven pickup options:
1. Selector switch on position 1: bridge pickup
2. Selector switch on position 2: bridge and middle pickups
3. Selector switch on position 3: middle pickup (Jeff Beck JR, which sounds absolutely great in this position)
4. Selector switch on position 4: middle and neck pickups
5. Selector switch on position 4 plus toggle switch "on": all three pickups (well balanced sound, warm and still crisp enough)
6. Selector switch on position 5: neck pickup
7. Selector switch on position 5 plus toggle switch "on": "Telecaster" selection with the two Hot Rails pickups in the bridge and neck positions - awesome surf sound! Turning down the tone pot just a little adds a nice flavour to it. :yes11: :10:
