70's Era Gibsons

Re: 70's Era Gibsons

You haven't played mine.

I don't see how you can warp a 3 piece maple neck, but I guess anything is possible.

my 76 Deluxes 3 piece maple neck went real funny... every 6 months i was having it dressed to get the lumps out of the neck... finally they did a complete neck removal and rebuilt it... most of the issues were at the neck/body joint all along but the neck was warping too...... but the fingerboard had been sanded straight so many times it was too thin... so they did a complete custom job on it

I liked the RD ARtist. I played one in a shop that had a neck that I kinda liked. I wanted one really bad back then.

I never found a Les Paul back then with a neck that felt good.

I used to have an ES-347 second that I really liked. But it had that issue with the finish being kinda tacky, and I don't think it was necessarily the most toneful guitar. It had that TP-6 fine tuning tailpiece, which I've read is considered by some to be a tone robber.

Oh, man... I had one as well, that was one of the best if not the best guitar I've played in my almost thirty years career as a musician.

It got stolen. I still get tears in my eyes when I hear "ES-347".

Re: 70's Era Gibsons

I have owned a # of thes guitars and some were nice but most really junky. I owned one Black 76 PRO with P/90's that while it weighed a TON it also played and sounded great! There are some real gems out there in the 70's Gibsons like the Black 76 Pro I had. However I would NEVER buy one of those guitars unless I could actually handle and play it. Sorta like buying a new Gibson today sadly:banghead:!

Back in that era I wonder what the Gibson QC inspectors were smoking. I had a buddy who owned a shop back then. I saw quite a few Seconds that I could never find a flaw in a and then BUNCH of non seconds that were just so crazy bad out of the box he sent right back so???

Howdy,

Regarding the TP-6 tailpiece, that darned thing is easily replaced with a standard "stop" model. I did so with my 1980 ES-335 CRR. I also replaced those rotten "Dirty Fingers" (heavily overwound Ceramic monsters) with SD 59s. Sounds, looks and plays great now.

Ace, you are killing me. Let them think Norlin's are crap. In fact, I say we start spreading the word that ALL Norlin's are complete junk. Then, when the market drops out, we BUY THEM ALL UP!!! More for us, then, my friend!!!
