70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

Hi, is anyone familiar with the dating process or the serial #'s from the late 70s gibson's. The back of this headstock is a *7* digit code and not 8 and there is not a made in USA logo either. Yet the front of the headstock has the gibson logo, les paul model and standard logos all as normal. I may be paranoid but isnt it a ripoff LP?

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

these dont seem to work - someone sent them to me on a camera phone
yeah there are only 7 digits, not 8

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

i hear the best and easiest way to date it is to open the back and look at the pots... but i assume you are working off photos and that may not help

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

Also look that the patent number on the pickups.. it should be the patent number to some sort of bridge. Gibson stamped the wrong patent number on them.... So if it's wrong.. it's right... in this case..

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

yeah i am going off a trade offered off of craigslist
he wants my 96 mint PRS mccarty with duncans pickups AND cash for his "79 LP standard"
no way was my reply.

Find a copy of George Gruhn and Walter Carter's book on vintage guitars. They have a whole section on dating Gibson guitars. Gibson has used a few different schemes for dating over the years.

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

from what the serial number tells me your guitar was made at the Nashville Plant, on July 24th, 1979, Production Number: 36

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

cool - but arent that period of LP's not that good. And why wouldnt there be the made in USA logo on it? It's just odd.
Also isnt 3k plus a bit much for it in 9/10 shape?!

Sir - I am offended. I will consider it a result of your youth and poor upbringing! If you are EVER down my way I'll let you play a RIGHTEOUS 79. Just to show you that the year stuff should only be applied to wine. And then, I'm afraid we'll have to dual....

3k for the ultimate axe? No. Generally, 3k for that - way much. I got a 73 in killer shape with DiMarzio's for just over 2k. and that was still abit steep.

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

very few LP's from the 70's should be priced 3k... The red and Blue sparkel top Deluxes from 74/75 are rare enough to get over 5k these days for sure...

3k for a 70's LP would have to mean it was Dead Mint... New Old Stock quality... I saw a dead mint like new 1969 Deluxe that was appraised for 5k American.... The guy had bought it new in 1970 in Highschool but never learned how to play it... It sat in his case unopened for almost 30 years.... He had the original sales slip all the little pieces of paper that were on the guitar or in the case when new... I'm a huge Deluxe fan and i would of killed to own that one... but saddly 5k is way out of reach for me and even if i had the money i don't think it would of been worth 5K for a Deluxe.... i'd look elsewhere for a cheaper deal.... but it was a NOS lp for sure!!!!

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

aceman are you saying there wasnt a made in usa logo on the back of your headstock? this fact has me doubting the trade would be worth it 'cause i dont know if its real. keep in mind i havent scene the gibby in person, only over crappy camera phone pics. if someone here can tell me its legit and that the missing logo isnt a big deal then i might have to do it. I have a mint 96 prs mccarty that i'd be trading it for and I want to do the trade straight up. I think if the guy's gibby is a real 79 LP then that trade is fair, no?!

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

dont trade. you would definitely be getting ripped off. maybe check ebay for a cs and trade your prs with original pickups.

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

DONT! you can find WAY better deals out there..he's asking WAY to much for the LP I got my '75 LP Custom for $3k Canadian..thats like $2.5kish USD

Re: 70s Gibson Les paul! Need help!

i value my 96 prs mccarty @ 2200, and i want to trade him straight up for his 79 LP standard. the serial # checks out but what i'm dying to know is if it's a ripoff since there IS NOT A MADE IN USA inprint below the serial number. I'm going to see it tonight but i'm praying someone gives me a clue before i go there
