I just ordered a 72 telecaster reissue. (I am in love with an origional at my local guitar shop but it's not for sale) I have a few questions about it. Is it strung through the body? are the supposedly Seth Lover designed Wide Range humbuckers on it worth a crap. Also what strings should i use for a really warm vintage tone. If any tele fans out there own on or know soemething about these reissues let me know if it's a good guitar or did i just get 750? stolen out of my pants.

Re: 72 Telecaster Deluxe reissue

The strings are body through, yes the pickups are crappy and should be replaced asap w/ Duncans (I just dont like Fender humbuckers), and for a warm tone, go w/ flatwound 11's.

What pickups should i use in it. I am really into a warm vintage rock tone. My sg has 59's in it.

Re: 72 Telecaster Deluxe reissue

give thoes pups a try, seriously... they are supposed to be fairly accurate rerpductions of seths origionals, also, i think they sound good

Re: 72 Telecaster Deluxe reissue

Those are good guitars. The neck pickup can be split or you can send it to SD for a rewind. The bridge pickup might actually be decent, so give it a shot. One trick to use is when you have both pickups on, try fooling with both volume knobs...I found if I turned down the volume on the neck pu a bit it really sounded good. There's a website out there devoted to that guitar with a forum...try Googling it.

Enjoy it!

Re: 72 Telecaster Deluxe reissue

If you do change the bridge humbucker, have the original cover put back on the new pup. Those just look too cool!

I really liked the sound of that guitar (especially in the neck). Nice and chimey, but not brittle or too bright. Switch to the bridge and roll the tone back a little, but I spent most of my time on it playing the neck bucker.

Re: 72 Telecaster Deluxe reissue

I own a MIM '72 tele custom ri, and it's great. The neck WRHB pickup is a bit wooly in standard mode, but I have mine rewired to a push=pull pot for a coil cut and the single coil sound is great. Learn about the coil tap mod here:

http://lidbjork.homelinux.org/72cc/

-look under mods. Another page has a feature on differences between vintage and ri WRHBs. The vintage WRHBs ahave a devoted following.

I've tried other ri guitars with WRHBs and they have sounded great. It seems the MIJs sound a bit better than the MIMs on that front.

If you don't like them, you'll need a new pickguard, as they are much larger than standard humbuckers.

One thing is for sure: the ri you just bought will be better made than 90% of the original tele deluxes. the 70s were fender's worst era for quality control.

Re: 72 Telecaster Deluxe reissue

personally, i loved the pups in that guitar. i thought they sounded terrific.

i, actually, would have gotten that guitar except for one problem, i hated the hell out of the fretboard. it was sticky as hell, and i couldnt even do bends....
