72 Thinline Tele RI

Thoughts on these guitars? I'm thinking of throwing down for one, closest tele I can seem to find what I would ideally want in a tele. Which would be a rosewood fretboard, U shaped neck, and humbuckers. The hollow body seems to be a bonus.

I was thinking of replacing them entirely, probably sticking A Phat Cat P90 in the neck and probably an Alnico Pro II in Bridge.

Thoughts?

my roomate last year had one of those teles, and let me tell you, that thing had an awesome neck on it. as far as the pickups, i didnt care for them that much, but i bet a set of phat cats would sound great in it. that's probably what i would stick in if i got one.

i loved the guitar~ great sound. the pups were even nice.


i would own one but the maple fretboard was impecable sticky, on about 3 of them...

Would replacing pickups on them be tough? They look like they are mounted by two scres on each side opposed to one.

I'm not sure, but the Wide Range HB looks a bit bigger than a standard HB or Phat Cat. The Phat Cat sounds great in a Tele, but I doubt that the AIIP has the juice to keep up with it - the Jerry Donahue is a much better match in the AII family.

I'm not sure about mounting, but if there is room for a single mounting screw between the existing holes, then you could just drill and mount. You can use shortened dummy screws to fill the blank holes afterwards -- all the kids on the block will wonder where you got a pickup that required 3 mounting screws per side. :cool3: :burnout:

Hmm I agree with you, they do look bigger. If they are mounted to the pickguard then all I'd probably have to do is get a new pickguard and cut it size?

Yea i definitely think i'm gonna need some mounting rings, they will fill the void pretty closely I think.

I'd suggest a new pickguard with correct-size holes for standard hbs. I'm sure one of the aftermarket places does one.

I'm not such a fan of the WRHBs. I have a tele custom with one, and I modded it to cut a coil. With the coils split, it sounds great, but it's a little wooly in full humbucker mode. I have heard thinlines that sound really good with the WRHBs, though, in particular an MIJ one I played a few months ago. Perhaps the pickups suit the thinline's wood combination better than the custom's.

Aside from the pickups, I really like the thinline ri.

I do agree the WRHBs in those are a little wooly. Any advice on where to find a pickguard that would suit my purpose?

well, under the pickguard, there is a little metl piece that lets a humbucker be used with the two holes. it is very nice to have since you can really dial in a great sound including the angle that the pickup sits in the cavity

yeah, i have one on the pickups in my bluesbird. it is great and a much better way of getting the tone you want with fine adjustments
