78 Custom

I've read the history of this pickup already. Is it just a little hotter PAF? If you ordered a Seth or PG at 9k would it essentially sound the same? What I'm getting at is it good for a little stronger PAF sound not necessarily VH tone?

Re: 78 Custom

A 78 is a 9k pickup...a Seth is around 8 and the PG is around 8 and a quater to 8 and a half...

You can not hear more power in 1k or less what you do get is a thicker midrange and maybe a little more crunch and compression...

A 9k Seth or PG will not sound like a 78 because the wind is differnet...a 9k Seth sounds like a stock Seth with a little thicker midrange and a litle more compression...same for a PG...

I tried a 78 once in a 58 reissue LP...great sound, not really the VH1 sound unless you are looking for it and even then in a LP it was a little differnet.

Compared to another 58 reissue LP with Antiquities they were similar in ways (both are an Alnico II PAF clone) but different as well...the Ant is more open and bell like where the 78 is a little more aggressive, more midrange heavy and more compressed sounding.

If you want a slightly hotter PAF the 78 is a great choice and unless you drop it in a Strat, plugged into a Plexi cranked to 10 and try you're not gonna get the VH thing...and even then unless you are trying your ass off you might still not get there!

Re: 78 Custom

Is it? I mean are they really different winds or just wound more or less depending on the type pickup?

They really are differnet winds...

You can try a PG, Seth, PG, Ant, 59...even to a degree an Alnico II Pro...all are PAF winds and all around the same DC but all of them have really differnet sounds and feels.

+1 to all that TGWIF has posted. Some of those p'ups will sound thinner, warmer, brighter, compressed, and etc when compared to each other. It's hard to imagine considering they're all around 8-9K. You really have to put the winds and magnets into the equation. I've owned a '78 which read 8.8k and I currently have a Custom Shop PG that's wound at 8.6K. They're still two completely different p'ups.

If you're looking for a stronger PAF, the '78 would be an excellent choice.

The 78 is much more aggressive than the PG.

The Seth is more airy and honkier in lack of a better word.

Not much in common.

Re: 78 Custom

The SD is very thin and very "assertive" to my ears. That one is meant for extensive rigs that fatten up the sound and then gives you more control, IMHO.

It's not a "just plug into a Marshall" pickup which is what you normally associate with a fat PAF.

Running those two guitars head to head was a great comparison of everything I though. The Ant Vs Seth, Ant Vs 78, Historic Vs Historic. If they hadn't had such similar weights I wonder if it would have thrown off the comparison?

To the OP....Christian hit the Nail on the head. Each wind is a little bit different and I know part of it is from the magnet wire insulation, part of it is from the pattern. In any case, I don't think you can "go wrong" with a SD PAF, but the 78 fits a specific need of aggression and PAF tone.
