Two weeks ago i bought a '78 on CL. I didn't even expect it to work, but I thought WTF got it : Signed by Seymour on the back....cracked bobbin.. single conductor..spot on 9K..loaded into my mahogany Jem SuperStrat thats been troublesome for pups.

I've had a C8 in this guitar. I've had a CUOA5 in this guitar. I've had a Custom/59 hybrid in this guitar. I've had a TB4J and a TB5J. All good but not like this...

The '78 just smoked them. Sorry folks. I've waited a while to post but this thing Kills. Thats it. Nothing else to say. Custom Shop '78 wins in shockingly fantastic style.

Clapton thru ACDC thru VH thru Satch....just awesome. For Metallica and beyond not so much....PATB2 is still my pup there...but for the price of two new mainstream pups, buy this and be happy.

How is the "juice" for legato playing? The 9K resistance has been keeping me away... I like to have some compression like the JB gives for tapping and legato work.

How are the sustain, juice and harmonics compared to hotter pups like the JB?

9K of 42 gauge wire is a LOT, so you still get a good bit of compression compared to other PAF style pups. The JB has a LOT of 44 gauge wire, but the compression is a bit different.

I've got two 78s, one is a TB that I've had in a CU24, and the other is in my R8. It does well in both guitars.

It surprised me - harmonic overtones and pinch squealies are right there, legato/tapping I found better than the demon, good, but you need to hit it right and strong. Dont expect a blackout though ;)

Its the growl with dynamics and clarity that hooked me though, I'm playing it through a mid heavy marshall classic rock sound, which I guess is what it was designed for.

This guitar was one of those ones that never seemed to like even the medium output pups...the C8 seemed a bit too mid heavy, the Hybrid C5/59 was little too toppy....the '78 seemed to just hit the sweet spot...anyways here it is.

Better than the Demon? That's great because I thought that the Demon just needed a little more juice to be perfect.

Oh and by the way, that is some sick ass ribbon mahogany you've got there, the chatoyance is excellent.

Re: '78 - OK I'm converted

Wow, that quasi-Jem is sweet! It's a clash of modern and retro that totally works.

Thanks folks, and to the mods for correcting my spelling mistake in the thread title.

Re: '78 - OK I'm converted

Thanks man :)

I played her again for a couple of hours there, and for HSH this is a really nice balanced combination. The demon neck works real well in the middle for a modern tone to counterpoint the PG and the '78. I autosplit it with the PG, for a nice jangly cleans. The body is a surprisingly light piece of mahogany with quite a warm tone, but as usual for mohog very picky for which pup it'll work with.

The neck is a 2000 super wizard, which has the nice thick walnut (I think?) stripe which matches the body well.

Re: '78 - OK I'm converted

Glad you like the 78,i did too until i got a guitar force eruptor on a trade i made here. It is even better than the 78 and i loved the 78 at the time.
It is a 9.1K,A2 PAF type that was voiced for you know who!:naughty:
Right now i am torn between the GF eruptor and the patb3 blues. both are incredible pu's and just have such a dynamic, open, singing tone. The 78 is still a great pup but it get voted behind these two others.
The patb3 is a touch tamer than the 78 and eruptor in the initial attack due to the design(staple poles between the actual strings)
