78’s are installed (logos removed)

My 78’s arrived and they are finally in my guitar. I’m SO glad to have it sounding like itself again.

In a previous post I asked how people were removing logos. What I ended up doing was using 2000 grit sandpaper (I screwed the adjustable screws in below the surface first.). I first tried it on a Distortion neck pickup that I’ll never use, and I liked the result so I did the same thing on the new 78’s. I was able to get it to a matte finish (I don’t like the glossy look of most new bobbins), and although it’s not uniform (I probably could have gotten it to be more uniform if I wanted to, but I didn’t want to), I like that because they have this old, worn look, minus the oxidation on the pole pieces.

I also painted the visible parts of the bottom plates black with automotive touch up paint since they’re direct mount and I think it looks better.

Now, before anyone points it out or asks, “You can get black bottom plates AND no logos if you ordered Shop Floor Custom, so why go through all the trouble when you could have just done that instead?”…that’s a great question.

The answer is that I got a set (neck and bridge) through their exchange program, but the red/black bridge pickup was a total impulse purchase from Reverb one evening, and now I still have a spare 78 TB in Zebra that I’ll find a use for later. That’s why.

If I was going to order Shop Floor Custom, the pole pieces would have been black, too.

The regular Zebra’s with the black kill switch were the Custom Shop 78’s and that’s how it looked since I built it 4+ years ago, and then I modified the electronics, installed that red kill switch, saw that black/red zebra 78, grabbed it, and I’m glad I did, I like the new aesthetic! Ok, so how does the 78 set sound?

I think the bridge pickup is pretty well covered, it’s an excellent bridge pickup and there are plenty of reviews on it out there, but I’ll talk about the neck pickup a little bit below since Mincer was asking about it too….

How is the neck 78? I don't hear a lot of people talking about them.

Yes, there is shockingly little information out there about the 78 neck pickup. Personally, I like it a lot, and it might be easier to describe some of what I DON’T like in a neck pickup, and then extrapolate that into the 78.

So, I don’t like a particularly bright neck pickup, I like warmth in a neck pickup, but not TOO throaty or dark. I’ll name three pickups that I found to be too bright in favor of the 78: Pearly Gates (although I’ve had PG sets in several guitars over the years and like them), Jazz (78 has less treble and more mids, in my experience), and the Suhr Thornbucker neck, which is a nice sounding, articulate pickup, but I like my neck pickup to be a bit rounder and not quite as articulate as something like the Thornbucker neck pickup.

The 78 neck for me is one of those “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” situations. It would be helpful I think for someone to compare the 78 neck with the 59 neck, but I haven’t had a 59 in any guitars for a lot of years.

Anyway, if I was going to throw a few adjectives at it, I’d say warm, smooth, balanced. It splits well, it plays nice with the bridge 78, and I prefer it over the Thornbucker, PG, Jazz, and Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF.

Well, it sounds like I would like it just fine!
I do like 'throaty' neck pickups, but not many have that quality.
