8 string guitars and guitar amps: How do they work?

Re: 8 string guitars and guitar amps: How do they work?

To each his own......maybe this would be more up your alley as Meshuggah is too much for your ear vagina to take ;). Tosin Abasi from the band Animals as Leaders is a phenom on the 8 string check him out.
Nah, it has nothing to do with my ear vagina. I just happen to like music that doesn't suck and is actually "legible" in a musical sense of the word. Tosin Abasi seems like a really smart guy and a great musician as well.

I was getting into it until the vocals came in. I always feel like getting those poor guys a cough drop or something.

I understand that Jens Kidman's vocals are highly abrasive to some people, I

get it.....but the music itself IMO has a killer groove to it and the way the

guitar patterns fall in different places in relation to the drum patterns and

vice versa (Poly-Rhythms) opens up a whole new realm of possibilities. I

enjoy the Technical aspect of Meshuggah's music as a whole. Sure, I could

take or leave the vocals but I don't think the band sucks in the slightest bit.

I don't understand how their music isn't "legible" in a musical sense either.....

I'm just curious what you mean by that?

That was clever. Really, VERY clever. Please, say more dumb crap like that.

You know that winking smiley face next to my response means I'm just bustin

your balls.....lighten up. You had no problem posting your opinion so I thought

I'd post mine. It's all good. The OP was curious on 8 stringed guitars so being

Meshuggah is the band that put them on the map I posted it.....like it or not.

Well letting the Bass Player handle the lows is the tried and true method. As we all know Guitar is a Midrange Instrument but I give props to Meshuggah for breaking away from the norm. The Funny part is in an interview with Meshuggah, their rhythm guitarist Marten Hagstrom said even though they play 8 strings a ggod chunk of their sound is the "Oil Tanker dragged over gravel" distorted bass that brings it all together.

Yeah, i know what you mean, forgot about that. What i mean though is that i think it sounds more musical, overall, when you have all instruments playing different things, like with each of them having a well defined character...But anyways, i think the discussion took a different path than it's original intention. Thanks for your answer anyway!

I think for guitar 7 strings is more than enough... after that its more of a novelty that wears off after a few years... not sure why ur asking about bass amps, they are for basses and push the low end.

I play bass and guitar and have great rigs for both. it sounds way better when there is less competing for the frequencies between the two! any thing below 30hz is really all feeling, our ears cant really hear it. no one really cares about those frequencies in a recording though as they are really hard to mix and you wanna get rid of em for the most part for rock music. live, its hard to mic those frequencies! for bass a lot of people play direct box cause its hard to mic with all the other volume on stage...

I asked about the bass cause i wanted to know that if we can't really hear below 20hz, how the hell can we hear the bass? Do we hear harmonics and from the really low fundamental notes we only FEEL the 'oomph' (like furniture shaking and all)? (like in the low B of a 5 string bass, for instance)

ya we just feel it, its a pretty clear feeling when you go to a rock show, you can feel it, I feel it when I play my bass rig, its like furniture shaking. but basses are like midbass compared to subwoofer type bass like Skrillex and dubstep...I just went to a Korn show...

I know what you mean Filipe. There is something to be said when all Instruments are complimenting one another in a live mix. When everything works together as a cohesive unit it just sounds right. Rock On Bro !!!
