8 Strings and 36 Fanned fret...things

A couple of years ago I became smitten with the band Animals As Leaders.
Their first 2 albums were awesome, their recent stuff requires advanced amounts of caffeine consumption to rock out to.
I jumped on the 8 string fanned fret band-wagon and birthed this playable placenta

Like a psychedelic maple leaf

-Locking tuners
-Lace Alumitone X-bar 4.5
-36-Fanned Frets (only 2 dead spots so far)
-Homemade bridge with string saver saddles

I'm still fiddling with what I'm gonna do with the humbucker wiring.
I might just go for the 2 push/pull volume, tone mod Series/split/parallel

But, who knows these things, these things: who knows:dunno:

Thats not what i was expecting. That thing is beyond silly cool.

Why does the body start at the 12th fret? Wheres the truss rod end?

I thought it would help in stability, needless to say, it is not a comfortable lap-sitter. (I live and I learn)
I made it with enough of a groove on the corner so I could have it rest on my lap at an angle, the only comfortable position apart from standing. Surprisingly o.k. on weight balance.

I used StewMac's 24" double-truss rod and 2 of their longest & thickest carbon-fiber reinforcement rods to keep the whole thing solid.

Sweet! I tried playing 8 strings but just couldn't catch on...so I'm sticking with 6 (or less for bass guitar)

Re: 8 Strings and 36 Fanned fret...things

Very interesting.

Whats the fretboard radius?

Technically, its around 15.75" radius
Hard to say for sure, cuz I made a custom sanding block for this build
by sticking some sandpaper to an old water-softener container-thing and rubbing a step-routed block on it.
15.75" is close

I thought it would have been easier, myself.
The larger gauge strings are very new to me
and what tunings to use are something that I am still messing around with, trying to feel it out

Re: 8 Strings and 36 Fanned fret...things

Yeah i dont think i could do that justice. So i just extend my 6 string guitar projects..

My deal is I typically base my playing using the E string as the root for the songs...if that sense...its like the E string is the anchor for the chords/keys I play in (regularly use a capo to move up and down to keep the same chords in a different key)

The two extra strings threw my whole playing off...like I couldn't find home plate. lol I liked them more as a drone...but just decided to keep working on the 6 strings.

Re: 8 Strings and 36 Fanned fret...things

Once you get up to that many strings, it is probably time to ditch extended versions of Standard Tuning and go with either parallel fourths or the Robert Fripp "crafty" tunings.

Woah. That's so ugly it has somehow wrapped around and become kinda likable. :P

That is exactly what I'm going through right now, I feel obligated to use the two new ones as often as possible, because they are there. I gotta seek buddha and learn to wait until their presence is needed in a song/practice session

Like seeing a professional model move around in real time.
Their cut features are so beautiful, that it's freakish.

And i prefer the term "gaudy"

I never gave it much thought before, but now I'm surprised that nobody called me vaj before you.

Are those the things that "imply" the sound of a neck pickup? similar to what's on the Ibanez RG550XH?
Totally forgot about that technology
