80s are coming back!!

Re: 80s are coming back!!

To get more metal on the radio, you have to execute the existing program directors via Guillotine and install a regime Of the People, By the People, For the People who want to hear metal on the radio.

Otherwise it's gonna be the same crap we have now.

Sounds like a plan. :firing:

In those days though, I remember a lot more rock and metal on the radio and national tv over here. Iron Maiden, Kiss, Whitesnake, AC/DC...
The absence of R&B, DJ's, Biebermania and "talent"/"reality" shows is what I probably crave the most though.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

At least there were some technical, talented players back in the 80's. (Gilbert, Vai, Satriani, Lynch, Moore, Lee, Eddie, Becker, Howe.. etc) Most of the new stuff I see now is someone flopping their fingers around on open strings like they are playing guitar hero on their X-box. I would welcome a return to some semblance of actual tone instead of this droning harsh metallic chugga chugga chugga stuff.

No offense to new people like Guthrie Govan... who can actually play... really well...

Re: 80s are coming back!!

Google/WIKI indicates I was indeed mistaken about fluffers. Seems I've been misinformed elsewhere. Heads will roll.

And yes, prices of USA Jacksons varied with specs. The Soloist Custom (ebony board, head and neck binding, mother of pearl sharkfin inlays) in a solid color had an MSRP of around $2450. Graphics upcharges were based on the complexity of the graphic, but typically ran $100-$150 extra for things like Zebra/Tiger stripes, Lightning Sky, simple stuff like that. Complex freehanded graphics like Bikini/Sunset Beach or Saturn/Universe/Space scenes could go up to $300 extra or more.

The Student models typically did have an MSRP of around $2K, simply because of the cost variance between ebony and rosewood/maple fretboards. I've seen older Jacksons that shared every Custom feature except ebony board. Why anyone would want MOP fins on rosewood is beyond me, but they were there.

Grover Jackson stated, when asked about why his guitars were double the cost of USA Gibsons and Fenders, stated that "people associate high price with high quality". If it cost twice as much as a USA Strat or LP Custom, it surely was twice as good. And they were.

I had no problem listening to the Shrapnel Records bunch, but I had no desire to participate in The Great Shred Race. Musicianship took a backseat to Technical prowess - you were great if you could wail a million notes a minute, even if you couldn't string together a melody. Mike Varney did a good job of separating the wankers and the talent, but once word got out, other labels popped up and signed anyone who could play an arpeggio or outrun a metronome, regardless of the musical quality.

I remember there was a Best Guitarist event at a local venue back then. Every malnourished, big-haired Shredder for miles around showed up ready to play Mr Scary and that Steve Vai thing from Crossroads. They wailed and they wanked and they wowed the crowd.
Then some fat guy got up there and played Hendrix/SRV/Trower style stuff and walked home with the trophy, a handful of prize cash, and a new fanbase.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

What sticks with me most about the 80's is the metal. Forget the hair and the pop. The plethora of horrible metal bands, thrash metal, was astounding. My friends collected so many tapes of unlistenable noise that it turned me off to the genre. I didn't take metal seriously again until I heard pantera. Back then the boys busted my chops for not being impressed by the heavy stuff. In hindsight I feel vindicated since very little of that mess survived.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

Yep - carry around a bottle of high faulting' olive oil and you got the image. :D

Re: 80s are coming back!!

I honestly cannot understand how and why Slayer are still around. I have tried to listen to their first tape for 20+years and cannot get more than 20 seconds into a song without either turning it off or skipping ahead in hopes the next song is better.

I didn't really care for Metallica at the time, either. I had to hear Orion first, because Battery sounded like punk. Once I got a feel for the music and the musicianship through Orion, I was able to go back and listen to the rest (still took me some time to accept Battery and Damage Inc). Once I got Ride The Lightning, it was the same - couldn't get past Fight Fire With Fire. Skipped to the next track and "hey wow, they actually can play rather than just flog".
But like you said, I really don't feel I missed out on anything by not jumping on those wagons when they first rolled by. Wish I'da bought up all those Mesa MKIIs and IICs the local shops couldn't give away at the time

Wow.

These bands have all been around for about 30 years now.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

I'm down with a new wave of new wave, and I've never stopped listening to hardcore or thrash, but the crotch rock cash grab was bad enough the first time. It needs to stay buried.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

While most of you guys are focused on the Rock side of the 80s I'd be glad to have 80's R&B and Newjack Swing back

Re: 80s are coming back!!

'80's coming back'? I don't want to listen to any band with spandex, ratted up hair, make up, platform shoes, and a whiney singer pouting for the camera.
Sounds more like you don't want to look at them from that. You've said nothing about how these hypothetical guys sound.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

I check out as soon as I can't hear what the guitar is doing. I always enjoy the obligatory shift from 4/4 to 7/4.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

Does this mean rock music is allowed to be fun again?

I hope!

'80's coming back'? Oh god, I hope not. Too much cheesy music and looks. I don't want to listen to any band with spandex, ratted up hair, make up, platform shoes, and a whiney singer pouting for the camera.

The 80's seemed good after disco, but in retrospect, it left a lot to be desired. It's very dated and little of it holds up well these days.

Yes, there was alot of cheese, but music was fun. And there was guitar solos. I also liked that lyrics had innuendos. we knew they were talking about s-x but it wasnt blatant. Bands put on a show. alot better IMO than the shoegazers and some of the lyrics today are so nasty. My kids listen to alot of the rap out now is just plain vulgar.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

The problem is that the kids are imitating our music, so its not passion or innovation that is driving them.

no thank you to all the synth pop crap that was around then where all the music was like a drum loop and backing track created on a casio keyboard. And, yes, so much heavy music now is very redundant sounding to me. Very interchangible. chugga chugga chugga guitar and singer grunting and growling.
Back in the 80s there were alot of guys that could really play and I enjoyed hearing singers. Yes, the whole scene got VERY redundant, oversaturated and all that. Having the look landed more record deals then talent. But again, I liked much of the music because it was guitar driven, and the concerts were a party instead of people trying to hurt each other, and all that. Not all was good with the 80s of course, so didnt mean to open a can of worms.. haha. but the artists made money, (lots of nose candy. haha) the music was fun.

I personally liked the way the ladies looked in the day too. primped up with hair and all.. Im sure it is all nostalgic for me as those were my formative years, but just saying.

Re: 80s are coming back!!

And I love it!! 80s music is coming back. Alot of the 80s bands have been touring again, some new rock bands have returned to the fun music style. Watching the olympics and noticing neon colors big again and Ibanez and Bc rich have brought back some neons and colorful guitars. Now Jackson:

I just cant wait for the girls to go back to the big hair!!!

I love the '80s as much as anyone, but hopefully not too many guys will go back to big hair and the cross dressing clown look. But I dig big hair and trampy metal attire for metal sluts. :D It seems to empower them to follow through. :D

Re: 80s are coming back!!

If the 80's are coming back in any way at all, it's in the way analog synths, drum machines, big reverb, and pop-y vocal harmonies are being employed in music.

Personally, I'm not hearing or seeing any 80's-style neon pointies + racks + poodle hair + eyeliner in pop music at all. If anything, guitar trends seem to be veering more toward the opposite end of the spectrum: goofy-looking pawn-shop-special guitars and amps. In other words: the gear that poodle-haired spandex dudes wouldn't be caught dead with.

The neon pointy throwback stuff exists for one reason only: the guys who were teens back then are now at the age where their disposable income has peaked. That's who buys that ****. If you go out in the "wild", where 20-something starving artists are trying to be the next big thing, you won't see any neon ... unless some ultra-hipster is doing it ironically.
