My goal with this guitar build was to create an 80’s style shredder. This really isn’t my usual type of guitar style taste, but I figured I might as well do something different than what I already have and the 80’s nostalgia has been hitting heavy recently as I reminisce about a Charvel I sold back in the early 90’s and wish I hadn’t.
It had a nice candy red finish with the trademark Jackson style crooked headstock.
The finish on that guitar for some reason had a smell very fitting of the finish color itself.
It smelled almost like a strawberry cotton candy.
Anyway, I digress. The total cost of parts for this project was less than $100.
The Neck: In actuality cost me about $10 I guess. It was on a guitar that I won in a raffle when I attended a local bands gig. They had this used guitar up for raffle and all you needed to enter for a chance to win was buy one of their CD’s for $10, so I bought one and as luck would have it the guitar was mine.
When I got the guitar home, I noticed that the guitar was obviously a project of one of the band members as the whole thing was redone in a not so good custom finish. About 1 month after I got the guitar, I was changing the strings and the nut broke off at the low E string. So, not being so enthused with the guitar anyway, I shelved it for about 2 years.
The body was either a BC Rich Warlock or some copy and I hate pointy bodies on guitars, So, I recently decided to take on a project that would at least use the neck of this thing, which is what I did like about the guitar. Now, all I had to do was get that crappy finish off the headstock and I was in business.
Well, refinishing the headstock turned into stripping and refinishing the entire neck as I decided I didn’t want the thick glossy lacquer finish that was on the neck itself.
Then I painted the headstock a semi-gloss black and added sever coats of clear.
The rest of the guitar is from parts I won on auctions on ebay. The body was $15 plus shipping. I probably should have went for a black Bridge, but what I had to choose from was somewhat limited and I won the one that is one there for $1. The Bridge pickup is a Duncan JB and the mid and neck are stock pups. The Tuners are Grover Tuners that came with the Neck Origionally.
So, what y’all think?
