So ive been thinking about pickin up a 9 string to mess around with. Ive been looking at the shecter c9 hellraiser and the ibanez rg 9 string. Im curious about pickups. wether active or passive would be better for the low end? Anybody familiar with these massive bastards?

Re: 9 string pickups

I had to google this.... 9-string guitars?

U wot!?

I just don't even...

Er... get two EMG81s, cut one in half, ram it in the cavity, job done!

Or just play something and just tell people what you're playing. Is it me, or can nobody else make out any note definition on 8 string guitars live?

Re: 9 string pickups

Observe my avatar. Ten strings! That's one more, innit?

Re: 9 string pickups

Just get a ten string pup and run the 9 strings through the 9 spaces between the ten poles. Easy and effective.

Re: 9 string pickups

Why not get nine single-pole pickups, wire them up to individual toan pots and away you go...

Why be a knob to the guy? How about we sling crap at you the next time you ask about a product that isnt our favorite

Re: 9 string pickups

To the OP... 9 string offerings are slim right now. I know the SD's own custom shop can make them they are not cheap. Both SD and Tim at BKP will rewind the passives that come on Agiles and Ibanez's which is a much cheaper route to go. And of course EMG makes their 909 but if you have a guitar thats routed for passives you will have to rout for the EMG's Oh and i forgot but Lace has alumitones in 9 string also but i have no experience with them in any version

As to which is better thats purely a matter of tasted but none of the stock passives have been impressive.. merely functional. If it was me i would buy the schecter with the EMG's already in it and call it a day.

Haha, I didn't mean anything nasty. But I do think that whole single pole piece pickups thing may possibly be genius...

Re: 9 string pickups

Can your amplification handle it is the question? As for pups selection you might get more info from the guys on the 7string.org forum. Most of them deal with extended range instruments and i'm sure they will have some recommendations. As for a maker I can think of Q-tuner I think has a 9-string pup.

I had forgotten about those guys... the disappearing act a couple years ago left a bad taste in my mouth... Are they actually producing pickups now? Last I knew it was all prototype stuff but that was over a year ago.

Re: 9 string pickups

Yea they have a new look and design I believe. Look more like EMGs but don't know about how they sound now.

Yeah I just looked them up again... they still have really low activity I wouldnt place bets on them... The new EMG look is lame... the original weird coils was a lot of what made them cool before

Re: 9 string pickups

Thats what I liked about the old ones as well the red and clear plastic with all the screws. Not really a fan of the new look myself either. I think the old ones were too expensive to make was what I heard so he had to change up his business plan. Their still a bit pricey for me to try one out although I like hi-fi/clear pups.

Re: 9 string pickups

Thanks for the feed back. I was origionally looking at the agile 10 string but nobody reputable makes a ten string pickup that ive seen. So i figured the 9's are in the up and coming, why not. And im running a bugera 333xl infinium. I put 4 6l6GC's with 4 ecc83's. Through an old crate cab with 2 eminence swamp thangs and 2 eminence texas heats.

No idea if it would fit, but Wilde makes 10 string lapsteel pickups. I believe there are some makers who make lapsteel pickups that big. Whether those fit or suit your purposes is another question altogether.

That setup description sounds awesome
would a piezo help,or, do you want more traditional pickups?
You might have to have someone do custom pups, which would be pricey, but it would allow you to get a specific sound going that route.
Those lower strings are tricky, too much bass=muddy, too little and it almost defeats the purpose.

Edit: Bare Knuckle Pickups may have 9 and even 10 string pups available, either in the future, or, upon special request.

Re: 9 string pickups

Not sure if you have thought about this but is your rig set up up to handle the low end of a 9 or 10 string properly? Pickups only account for so much. Your speakers and cab are just as equally important as well.

Re: 9 string pickups

I read that part which is why I asked the question. I've yet to hear a 9 or 10 string through a 4x12 guitar cab with guitar speakers that sounded decent on the bottom end in person. That set up might work though for the desired tone but can't help but wonder.

Is this still a relevant question to you..?
