90s Jackson Dinky vs Modern Dinky

So I have a Japanese '97 dinky dk2m and my friend have a Mexican 200-something dinky dk2m. My guitar is a bit lighter than his in spite of the fact that they are both made from alder. So did Jackson do something with the wood of the modern dinky or one of us got ripped off?

Not all wood of the same type is of equal density. Especially if it is sourced from a different spot they can range quite a bit.

Also keep in mind hardware affects weight as well.

They have the same hardware (the only difference is the modern one doesn't have mounting ring). The wood is what I was wondering about.

Wood is an organic substance–no two pieces will be the same.

Basswood is typcially a light wood, but I've felt some super heavy pieces. Mahogany is usually a heavy hard wood that weights a lot...but I've felt some mahogany Les Pauls that were lighter than most.

Weight does not equal tone, if they both play nice and sound nice then nobody got ripped off (even then getting ripped off would be claiming solid wood when it was actually plywood.)

I doubt anyone got ripped off. As already stated, wood can often differ in density and therefore, weight. If the lighter guitar plays and sounds great, then enjoy the fact its going to be easier on your back during a long playing session.. Ill share a story of a mistake I made.. Back when Epiphone brought out the Ace Frehley Sig models, I got one of the black ones. It weighed just over 6 lbs. Much of the weight was the 3 Super Distortions.. To me, I was thinking a good LP should be heavy, and that one felt like a toy cuz it was so light. So, I sold it.... BUT>>>>it played great, sounded great and the black was kinda rare, so with my bad back, the light weight was a blessing.. So Ill always regret selling that one..
