Fulltone's product line has several pedals that can handle 18 volts, There are other pedal manufacturers who also indicate that a 18 volt supply will give more head room and that their pedals can handle the increase voltage.
Fulltone provides a schematic to wire two 9 volt batteries together to obtain that 18 volts.
An easy and I believe better way for gigging is to add that additional battery directly inside the effect box (If room is available) and add a DTDP switch on the side.

One direction = 9 volts and hit the switch again = 18 volts and instant boost.
+ <> + ~~ -
- <> - ~~ +
Where <> means straight connection via switch and ~~ means that a hard crossover connection is made on the switch and extra battery.
It works for me.
