A 2 Pro vs. '59's

Re: A 2 Pro vs. '59's

Alnico 2 Pros have full, plump mids and low mids. 59's have a little more output but are a little hollow in the middle to my ear, but if you have a dark-sounding guitar, 59's can be great. All other (brighter sounding) guitars, I vote for the Alnico 2 Pro.

Re: A 2 Pro vs. '59's

I was sure I had decided on PG's in another thread I started. Then I started readiing the wonderful things people had to say about
A2 pros in other threads. 59's were my choice early in that thread. So I'm down to A2's or 59's. I don't wish for the highs the PG's have. It was suggested to think against mixing mag types(ie:a2n/59b)
I have a new Epi LP Standard. I've heard they're dark. (It does sound on the muddy side)

Re: A 2 Pro vs. '59's

A2 Pro's are some of my favorite pup's, particularly in the neck position of a Les Paul. They'd make a great choice!

This is pretty much right on target. Both pickups are great and can really do most anything with the right amp behind them. The APH-1 is a smoother more middy pickup with spongier lows while the 59 is tighter in the bass, a little more scooped with more punch and attack. Can't really go wrong with either.

Re: A 2 Pro vs. '59's

59'as are a great pickup BUT in the neck of a LP a 59n cab be a bit too much on the bass...I know you liked the idea of going with the Pearly Gates set but to be honest I think you'd be much happier with an Alnico II Pro in the neck and a 59 in the bridge...you'll have a nice round/smooth neck thats not muccy but still very full and a nice powerful (In a PAF way) bridge...think Slash on the neck and Jimmy Page on the bridge...don't forget those new pots and caps! And also, don't forget that 21 exchange policy!

You've helped me a lot fireguy. So has everyone else.
Is it ok to mix mags. lln/Vb?. and please tell me about the 21 exchange.

if you buy a Duncan pickup new from a Duncan dealer and you don't like it for any reason you can exchange it for a different pickup within 21 days...it kicks ass!

Don't listen to this clown!

J/K Bro!!! Fatboywhitney, Christian's right on the money. Try out a pickup (or a set) and if you don't like them, you've got 21 days to exchange it for something else. Its totally no hassle and one, if not the best, guarantees in the business!

BTW...TGWIF knows his stuff! Good advice indeed.

Sooo, A2pro n/'59 b. Your description sound perfect. Mag combo OK?

You're right, kick ass return policy.

My understanding is that '59's use a V mag and A2 pros well use a 2 mag.

Sorry to Hijack....Yes, you are correct with the difference in mags, but there is no issue with mixing and matching.

I think I'm going to move to that combination in my '96 LP Standard. I was playing A2Pros in it for a while - loved the neck, but found the bridge a little too compressed sounding in the mids and a bit too loose on the bottom end. Swapped over to a '59 set - love the punch and bite of the bridge and its more open tonality, but the neck is a little too bass-heavy. Reckon the A2Pn with the 59b will be perfect!

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with mixing magnets. In my LP, I have a Phat Cat in the neck which has Alnico 2's, and a hybrid Jon Moore/Zhangbucker in the bridge with Alnico 8. My 355 has a Jon Moore with Alnico 4 in the neck and the bridge is a C3 (CC with Alnico 3).
