A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

Can I do that? My matchless has Hi and Lo inputs, and I was thinking about running a Y cable from an A/B box (not Y, cause I don't want to run them both at the same time) so I can use the Hi input as a solo boost.

thoughts? would I accidentally blow up my amp? cause that'd be an unfortunate circumstance

thanks!

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

you wont blow it up but im not sure it will do what you want. on many amps if you plug into both inputs they end up being the same.

if you have a tweed style amp that has seperate channels with individual volume controls then you can switch between them

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

i dunno if it'd work, but you can't use a y cable. You'd have to think of each input on your amp as a "different amp" from the point of view of the A/B switcher. you should have a cable running to the low input (from A) and a different cable running to the high input (from B).

but like Jeremy said, who knows if this would actually work as you want it to.

might just be easier to get a boost pedal...

So, when will this amp go back to GC?

Matchless amps are not built for the player who wants an all singing, all dancing multiple channel switching amp like those made by mesa, marshall, engl, peavey, rivera etc.
If that is what you are after, then no amount of hand built, point to point goodness will make you happy. I like matchless amps. I also like marshalls and fenders etc. Single channel amps are great. SO are multi channel. It all comes down to the job at hand.
Just get the amp that is built for the job you have in mind rather than trying band aid solutions that will not really give you what you are after.

Most amps that feature a HI and LO input socket on the same channel utilise the switching function on the jack socket (look at the input jack and resistor arrangement on most amp schematics) to create the two different levels. I have vague memories of trying this idea many years ago, and discovering that once both jacks have plugs inserted into them, both inputs became the same level. You can try this for yourself without getting inside the amp ; plug your guitar into one of the inputs and a short guitar lead into the other input....it may be a little noisier than usual due to the unused lead being plugged in, but have a listen to how the guitar sounds, then swap the two plugs at the two input sockets and listen again.

As has been mentioned already, the only real way to achieve this with one amp is by using a two-channel amp and switching between channels.

The two inputs end up sharing the impedance. (i think thats the right term...)

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

there's this new thing that just came out, i think they call it a stompbox?

it's pretty cool. you plug it in between your guitar and amp (and this is the cool part) when you step on the switch, they can be used to make your guitar sound louder, dirtier and heavier! It's so cool! I use like five different ones.

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

seriously? What will they think of next?
Guitar playing will never be the same!

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

so I guess it won't work then...

It wasn't a make or break deal anyways, I already use my OCD as a clean boost anyways, which sounds great after all my drives and fuzzes. I was merely curious

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

I know this won't work in my JMP which is unfortunate because both inputs with maxed preamp sound great but very different. But that's why I have a few OD pedals lying around.

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

They do cancel each other out when two plugs are in, but I don't think it would work anyway...going from the low input to the high input on most amps wired like that is a HUGE volume boost.

Re: A/B switch back and forth from Hi and Lo inputs on amp?

Yes it sure would be a big jump in boost. Not sure if it would be useful even for a solo channel.
