A couple new custom shop ideas

Hey all!

I have a hankering for a new custom shop 'bucker for one of my guitars. It has a mahogany body, maple top, rosewood neck and ebony board...it is also pretty picky when it comes to pickups and I am not QUITE where I want to be with it yet! Right now I have an S-Deco8 in there which is pretty good and a 'screamin demon8 was ok as well. The guitars tonality overall is big low end and big top end....which tends to get shrill. Really have to tweak the controls on my amps when I play that guitar! I guess what I am looking for is: keep the low end tight, present mids and a rounder top end and enough compression when I dig in for leads.

My ideas thus far (I am open to suggestion, obviously!) are: '78 model with 2 rows of allen screws and A8. An overwound 'demon with an A8. Was even thinking some iteration of the brobucker might do it.....or I could be way off! Let me know what you think!! Thanks!

Go with a Custom 8

The custom8 is normally money, but not in this guitar; just too much lowend. The regular custom and custom5, two other pickups I dig don't sound great in this guitar either. The jb and RTM were fails as well! Haha!

Tries the Custom Custom yet? Sounds like it might be a winner in there.

I have a mahogany/maple body rosewood neck guitar too. Glad I'm not the only one having a tough time getting the right pickups for it. Strong lows, and low mids. But the highs are strange, to me it sounds like they're muted but some of the bad overtones stay strong.

I had good luck with hybrids. I'm currently using a 59B/A2pro N with an A2 in the neck and a full shred/alt8 in the bridge. The neck hybrid is a double screw configuration and sounds great in both spots. I do think the double screw coils work well for this wood combo. Put a ceramic or A8 in it and its a versatile yet powerful bridge pickup. The full shred/alt8 is not as good but very unique.

What is the s-deco like in it? that's one I want to try in mine.

if you're wanting a CS pup, call MJ and tell her what you want... along with what you've tried and what the variance is.

Hey man! Ya, you pretty much nailed describing how I hear the rosewood neck tonality as well! Those sound like a few really cool combos and to be honest, I have never really tried many hybrid`s in this axe. My other rosewood necked guitar is a PRS McCarty with a rosewood neck and board....the S-Deco is KILLER in that guitar!! Tight lows, hot PAF vibe, broad but not spiky mids and present but musical highs!! I am thinking the rosewood board might be the reason. In my current guitar, the Deco does sound very good....I am probably being nit picky, but like I say, I want the highs rounder in that guitar! That said: try an S-Deco....my overall fave duncan. I have/use them in a few of my guitars and with A2, A5 and A8 mags....so if you have any questions fire away!

Darth....good advice and that is what I am doing...likely the best way seeing as she is the expert!! I was just looking for some suggestions from you folks!

The overwound Demon with A8 sounds like a great idea for your guitar. Certainly worth a try.

This is the way we are going. A demon8 with and overwind/modified wind to smoothe the highs but retain the things that make the 'demon such a great pickup! Should be a pretty cool pickup!
