A/DA Flangers .. Big vs new small one

Re: A/DA Flangers .. Big vs new small one

You know, I went through this with the Dunlop Tremolo. Old big box and new MXR small box. Or the EHX Holy Grail and Nano Grail. Same argument could be made for the Duncan these days.

Most people shopping for that stuff want it exactly how it was. But then, there is the other crowd of "I'd like an AD/A except with true bypass" or what er upgrade that makes sense.

I have a hard time believing that the two are the same, but I'd also expect that it was better - so I wouldn't worry...

Re: A/DA Flangers .. Big vs new small one

Another thing a lot of people don't know is that the old ones had mini pots all over the circuit board, so they could be tuned to the player's ear. As a result, I'm sure the actual sound of vintage ones is all over the place. The basic sound is there, but sweeps and ratios might vary pedal to pedal.

Since it's A/DA, not a clone company, I'm sure the compact version is pretty close in sound to the original. A normal 9V plug is a big bonus, because the old ones required it's own power supply.

Gearjoneser, Do you know if the reissues (full size) have the mini pots?? never cracked mine open to see

Re: A/DA Flangers .. Big vs new small one

The mini pots are for tuning the voltages on the BBD chips, not for tailoring the sound to your preference. Although I guess it works that way since the sound is changing. You should see them on any pedal with BBDs where they don't just fix the values. From the factory there are specific voltages they are used to adjust, for example Howard Davis and Analogman will retune a vintage Deluxe Memory Man to factory specifications after they've drifted over the decades.
