A Devine Moment

I don't know what to make of Carlos Santana! Just when I convince myself that he's nothing more than a mediocre guitarist he suddenly morphs into a superman! I guess it was the late 90's when my wife and I last attended one of his concerts. He was starting to tick me off cause he was going through a medley of his tunes. You know a few bars of this then a few bars of that. I had not paid good money to hear him play partial tunes strung together! AHHHHH! A bunch of mediocre Soul Sacrifice minor blues jungle boogie cliche'! And not even the complete tunes at that! :kabong:

Suddenly, out of nowhere, he and Chester (keyboardist) went into an eastern influenced raga type groove! Man it was profound! It was like the heavens had opened and the ghost of Coltrane had descended and was whispering in his ear what to play! Sadly, he only played a few bars of that and immediately went back to his A minor booty music madness.

To be honest, I knew that in the 70's he had a number of collaborations with some heavy cats the likes of John Mclaughlin, Alice Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Herbie Hancock to name a few. Those players have to have made a profound mark on him. So deep down I guess I always knew what his potential was. It's just that he seldomn seems to deliver what I know he can.

Truthfully, I think many of our favorite artists do the same sort of thing. Could it be that they view those of us out here as the ignorant unwashed masses? Do they think we lack the sophistication to appreciate something that's cutting edge? I get the feeling that some of these guys have some real heavy stuff tucked away in thier private studios that the public will never get to hear. They just feed us the booty shakin crap!
