A few questions for you strat guys.

hey whats up I've been considering selling my les paul special faded and getting a mexican strat or tele or both after watchin some hendrix videos and listenin to kevlar3000s clips I want some wammy bar action plus I love that twangy slap on teles. I cant decide if I want an HSS or a SSS I know the humbucker would serve more versatile but my les paul classic has got the humbucker thing down pretty good. I've always thought if I get a strat its gotta be all strat you know. also a wild idea I had was to get a prewired burns trisonic pick guard with the phase switches for brian may tones, it would be cool if it had a switch for series or parralell then it could be either single coil or p 90ish. also another question for the strat players, when you play how often do you use your bridge pickup? my local store has about 30 MIM strats and like 10 MIM teles so I could probably find a good one and switch pickups.

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

What I love about my H-S-S superstrat is the fact that I can get the best qualities of both a Les Paul and a Strat in one.

I love my cleans. Strats do it better IMHO. I get awesome cleans and phenomenal bluesy overdriven tones with my setup. My middle single coil is my rhythm tone, I often use my neck/middle for blues and my neck for a lot of lead type stuff.

However, when it comes to heavy distortion, you NEED a humbucker. With a flick of the switch, I'm there. In fact, with the mahogany/maple body and maple/indian rosewood neck, I get perfect humbucking tones. Nothing midrangey or dull. I get rich, full, thick, rich humbucking tones. They blend well with the single coils adding new dimensions to the sound.

I HATE phase switches, I just don't like having to pull a bunch of switches while I'm playing. That's really why I'm not too keen on the Tom Anderson Switcheroo system. Some people don't like the 5-way switch system, but IMHO if you mix that with a simple blend knob, you get a wide variety of easily accessible (and useful) tones. I think crazy wiring systems like on the Jaguars just killed any ease of use.

I have heard cool things about crazy custom strats like you mentioned with a p90 in the neck. I need to find a link for a highend guitar company that made weird guitars like that, they were pretty original.

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

I would personally suggest SSS to anyone, but since you're used to humbucks, HSS would be more practical for you. Don't bother with phase-switching. Bells and whistles don't mean much if you can't effectively apply them, and for me, personally, I get a large enough variation of tone from my amp.

You might feel more comfortable with a Tele, if you don't want to stray too far away from a nice heavy chunky tone.

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

Nothing wrong with getting a Strat, but for God's sake don't trade your Les Paul for it!!!!

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

I'll post extensivly on this tomorrow. It's late and I'll f*ck up. :D

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

ok, with coil tapping, you can make a LP sound like pretty much any guitar, except a telecaster

so i'd reccomend doing that, and then getting a telecaster

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

Coil tapped humbuckers can sound very good, but they will NOT sound exactly like a real Strat or Tele single coil. Totally differant pickups and construction.

For one thing, in a Strat or Tele single coil the polepieces ARE the magnets and the wire is wound directly around them. In a full size humbucker (like a Duncan 59, JB, etc.) the polepieces are steel slugs or screws and the magnet is a bar magnet underneath the pickup. TOTALLY DIFFERANT.

As for which Strat to buy, I'd try a jillion MIM Strats and buy the best one. I like the Jimmie Vaughn model myself. Great neck, medium jumbo frets and very good pickups.

You can replace them with Duncan's someday to make it even better. Some Antiquity Surfers or Texas Hots would be nice. Or the APS-2/Twangbanger set is fat, chunky and simply awesome too!

But the stock Fender Tex-Mex set in the Jimmie Vaughn Strat are very usable...especially if you don't have a real 50's or 60's Strat to compare them to!

Another vote for the JV strat... but also consider the Deluxe Series. Mine has alot of vibe and I love it.

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

Allright guys...I have a 1986 MIJ strat which I'm considering new pups for...Being new to this forum, I haven't been able to glean which SD pups would be ideal for it...Any recomendations? Thanks in advance!

Post a new thread with a description of your guitar and the tone you're after in the pickup part of the forum

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

thanks for the recommendations, I think a tele with a standard tele bridge pu and a humbucker neck would be cool. I know that I like the sounds of a tele bridge better than a strat bridge. thats why I asked how often you strat guys use your single coil bridge pick up because if you don't use it then I could get a humbucker in the bridge.

Keep your paul, and get a S/S/S MIM strat and mod it as you get money :-)

Re: A few questions for you strat guys.

Another vote for the JV strat. Or, check out the MIM classics. They're some of the best guitars Fender has put out in years. If they're good enough for Henry Garza, they're good enough for you and me :D

ya that sounds like it will be the best bet. i go through spells where i wanna sell it as quick as possible and get a new guitar, then other times I really dont wanna go thru all the trouble of listing it and all that crap. I wouldnt get that much cash out of it as it is a players guitar and had an expertly repaired headstock fracture.
