A few words.....

Having been here a few years now I want to share where I'm at with my guitars and pick ups and to thank a few of you guys who have helped me along the way... a few I can think of include GJ, Blueman, Jeremy, WahWah, Kam for that A8, Bloodrose to name a few(if I missed a few I'm sorry but your help has been appreciated all the same) :friday:. I suspect like many I came here thinking my guitars sounded great because they had Gibson, Fender, S.D pick ups in when I bought them. I knew nothing about what pick ups sounded good for a particular style let alone what windings/ magnets sounded good in particular woods/ type of guitars. At this moment in time I have 6 electrics having sold at least 8 in the last 12 months or so and I feel that unless I absolutely have no choice will not be selling any more although I still feel somewhat selfish as they are after all only material things. Anyway, I digress. Tonight I got my 4 guitars that you guys have helped me with and here is how things have changed:

Page L.P. This a quite a bright LP, not too heavy and infact a really nice weight for 3-4 hours of standing playing. When I got it - it had a JB in the bridge and the stock Gibson neck pick up. Since then it has had various combos in there... I've tried the Seth b, Custom, C5, '78EVH, Antiquity, Brobucker and now a C8. In the neck I've tried Jazz, '59, PG, Seth b, '57, APii and now the Ant b. So finally this one has the C8/ Ant b with RSGuitarworks vintage wiring. It sounds really great, very well balanced and best way I can describe it is hot vintage.

'57 R.I L.P. Not so much messing with this one as my original got stolen after a break in. So I swapped out the '57s for a Brobucker/Jazzn which was in there for a good while. Whilst the Brobucker is just awesome in this all Mahogany guitar, slightly Hot vintage... it's so much better in this guitar than in the maple capped Page, I didn't like the Jazz n. Seemed dull, lifeless and over powering. If I lowered it too much to balance it it became as good as unusable. So a few weeks ago I put the '59 n in and what a difference. Very clear and defined and balances really well with the Bro.

Epi SG. I got this guitar as my beater as I didn't really have a beater as such. Bought it without any pick ups for a bargain price of £100 and it was mint. So, after consulting with you guys it has a C5/ '57n with A4. I cannot tell you how happy I am with this cheap as chips guitar... it looks cool, plays really good and sounds even better!

Yamaha SG. Now to be fair when I got this guitar back (I sold it a few years ago and always regretted it) it had a JB/'59n fitted. Well the JB just didn't work... can't explain but it sounded wrong? The '59n was just too much in this guitar...again all wrong. So I tried a Custom/ PGn... still not happy, C5/ PG with A4n... much better but still lacking something. Thought I'd drop the original Spinex pick ups back in... yes. The Yam pick ups really do sound right, they have a sweet, powerful but sophisticated sound.... very Pro.

So all that's left to sort out are the Wayne Tele and G&L Legacy. I'm not really sure there is much wrong with the Wayne, it's a H/S/S config and it certainly rocks with the Trem spaced Custom in the bridge. I'm not really sure what the S.D singles are? No id on them and I first though they were stacks but they aren't. I haven't really played with this guitar other than to play silly buggers using the Custom and Floyd and making silly noises. The G&L has a Hotrail bridge and the stock G&L middle and neck which seem very bland and lacklustre. Not sure what I'm going to do yet although I have bought 2 Zhang wound singles off Joe (Bungalow) which I'm waiting for.

So, that's it! So to all you guys who help us folk with no real knowledge understand what works and what doesn't, what to try and what not to try... I salute you and raise my glass (well, bottle actually) and thank you for sharing! :friday: I wish you all well, cheers and all the best. Don:).

Re: A few words.....

Thanks guys!

Re: A few words.....

Circle of life..... Ive learned much here, (and still rely on my forum bros for guidance) I try to pass it on.. Glad to be of any help that I can! :friday:

Re: A few words.....

I wholeheartedly agree with d1dsj. You guys are great. I have had much the same experience going from not knowing anything to now having a pretty good idea of what I'm doing. I still rely on help from the forum bros because the more I know, the more I realize what I don't know.

Heretico's vast electronic/wiring knowledge has been a lifesaver. Blueman got me started understanding the effect of different magnets, now nearly every guitar I use has "custom made" pickups due to all the mag swapping I've done. What a great tool.

Thanks so much, and keep on keeping on.

This has got to be the best place in the world for a player to learn about PU's and tone. I've learned a lot myself and always like to share it with others.
