A Gear Thread..mostly for the "older" crowd

Re: A Gear Thread..mostly for the "older" crowd

One thing I've noticed is that stuff becomes vintage after 20 years. The reason might be that players in their 20's don't have the desire to buy things 10 years out of style. Once they get a bit settled financially...hopefully...they'll buy new things and things from their teens.

The main thing to remember is that it's the rare, ltd, expensive, and stuff used by legends that become the most valuable. Personally, I think the 90's gear will be the most valuable in the future, outside of 50's and 50's, because it was the highest quality.

I don't think most MIM Fender stuff will ever be collectible, except for the Jimmy Vaughan strats. The 90's gems will be Custom Shop Fenders, limited edition Fenders, and especially the Custom Shop amps like the Vibroking, Tonemaster, and Dual Professional, some Signature guitars, 30th Ann. Marshalls, white 35th Ann. Marshalls, Gibson Historics, Ltd Gibson runs, Fulltone pedals that become discontinued, Klon, Z. Vex, Way Huge, Matchless, Bogner, Bad Cat, Victoria, and other boutiques that go out of business. And don't forget about the biggest collectible of the 90's..PRS guitars! Lawsuit Singlecuts, early McCartys, and rare PRS's will be the biggest guitar collectibles. The classic Mesas like early Rectos, Tremoverbs, Blue Angels, and Subway Rockets will be sought after by the 90's teens. I think the Gibson Goldtone amps will rise in value as well. Some of the better Schecters will also be valuable, since they're the definitive 90's metal guitar. The bottom line is that it has to be stuff that is discontinued or out of business.

I wonder if the 90's and younger guitars will really be that valuable in the
future because there is so much stuff. So many manufacturers and models
that there should lots of things around. Maybe if the world runs out of wood
or people in Africa and China start to buy all the guitars and amps there could
be big demand. Well, don't know but I guess in the fifties there was so little
guitars that they became rare naturally. I feel that big manufacturers produce
intentionally rare guitars every year and it isn't so special anymore?

Thats what's crossed my mind before too....the stuff from the last 10 years or so will probably never get all that valuable or collectible simply because there were about a bazillion guitars made during that time, and thats plenty enough for there to still be a zillion of them around for decades to come.

It's a possibility.

However the thing to consider is that in the great realm of gear, players relly horde the good stuff. Were all terrible examples of this; the right cut of wood in the right hands on the right day....were never letting it go. The really terrible stuff gets given up constantly and goes back into the pool.

Another aspect is that there are new players being born every day, and while the sheer numbers of 90's gear is sizable, the question will be amount of size versus the amount of available gear.
