A good tube amp, need help

Hi guys,

I bought a Marshall AVT50 about 8 months ago. It's an "okay" amp but I need something more versatile. I want an all tube amp that gets AMAZING cleans, thats my main thing. I'm going to be playing a lot of jazz/blues from here out (getting bored with rock/metal) and I don't really know what to get. I guess an old Fender Twin would be pretty good?

I'd also like something reasonably priced. I don't mind buying a head/cabinet or a combo.

Re: A good tube amp, need help

either a traynor or a fender hot rod/blues deluxe

but be aware, they are LOUD, my friend has an avt150 and my little 40 watter can drown him out

oh by the way, the fenders can sound a bit muddy on clean, but torresengineering.com has a brightness mod, comes in 2 levels of brightness. I'll be getting one put in in a few weeks, if you're interested i can leave a feedback report

Ya please do. Also, how is the clean channel on the other Fender amps like the Twin Reverb and just a normal twin?

Many old Fenders excel at clean, edge of break-up, and break-up sounds.

There are many to choose from. depends on what u want in terms of wattage, speaker configs. etc. I have a 68 Pro reverb that's killer!

U can go here: www.ampwares.com/ffg/ to see whats out there.

Some of the Fender reissues are nice. I have a fender deluxe reverb Reissue that's pretty cool. I'll be selling her soon cuz I have too many amps.

Good luck in u'r search!

You can get a nice tube amp for under 1000$. At 1000$ you have a fabulous amp (used market of course). Id definitely keep an eye on a SF Twin Reverb, and have it modded to BF specs.

I'm finding a lot of gems on Craigslist right now, looks like I'll defenitely be buying a used.

The silver faced twins of the 70s will get you some very very clean tone. Speakers make a big difference too. I like the JBL d120f and the Weber C12n for Fender spanky clean sounds.

Re: A good tube amp, need help

65 twin is the king of cleans IMO

celestion greenbacks are pretty much the aftermarket standard for good cleans tho

??? : private:

aftermarket standard for good cleans ? the greenback ? Well.. who told you that ? Some freak vendor at GC ?

Re: A good tube amp, need help

The greenbacks are only 25 watts, so the breakup is fairly early on those, especially if you slap them in that monster they call the Twin.

For $1000, your options expand a great deal. Most of the Fenders will have great clean tones, and ok overdrive for bluesy stuff. There are some amps out there that will give you amazing Fender like cleans, and nice greasy, thick OD when you want to get back to rock. The Rivera Knuckelhead comes to mind, and if you shop hard even a Bogner Shive for $1000-1200 give or take a little.

You can also get a 2 channel Marshall tube amp and have it modded (suprise I'd mention that). You can get the total package done for around a grand on that also, and have an overdrive channel that is voiced the way you want it. The cleans are so close to Fender I don't believe I can tell the difference.
