A grittier sounding 808/TS9 ?

I saw a Blues Rock band last night, and the guitar player used the usual suspects.
Fender Strat, TS9, (some 2nd overdrive . . . i think it was an Akai unit) and a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe (40W, 1X12)

It is the best Strat tone that i have heard live / attended.
I was never a tube screamer fan, and sold my TS9 a year ago.
I am wiling to try again, but this time i am looking for an overdrive with all the 808/TS9 qualities, but slighly grittier in it's tonal charcter.

Is there such a thing ?

Thanks to all.

You could use an eq pedal after the 808 and emphasize the mids or upper mids.

Get a RAT. Tube Screamers are soft clipping. You want a hard clipping pedal

The solution here I reckon is a simple mod to hard clip a standard Tube Screamer, be it a 9 or an 808.

Not that simple. Soft clipping puts the diodes in the feedback loop of the op amp. Hard clipping puts the clipping diodes on the output of the op amp connected to ground.

A cheap, but good solution is to buy one of these. For $30 you get a DS-1, Distortion +, and a Rat.

Will an EQ enhace / add some grit to the tone aswell ?

Absolutely. I've had great results tweaking the sounds of my overdrives, improving the sound or making it grittier. Starting with a light od such as the East river drive.

Re: A grittier sounding 808/TS9 ?

That is what I came here to say.
Although I am not exactly sure what "grittier" means? Less smooth?

I would imagine so. Not as creamy, which is exactly what the SD1 sounds to me compared to a regular Tubescreamer. A bit more raspy.

Re: A grittier sounding 808/TS9 ?

Yup, Boss SD-1. It has asymmetrical clipping diodes vs. the symmetrical setup in a TS. Sound give you a little more edge. If that's not enough, do the C6 mod to "take off the blanket".

Sweet . . . thanks . . . i will then deff look what an EQ can do for me.
