A guitar for my kid

I know this has been hashed out a few times already, but I want to buy my 7 yr. old son an electric. I've looked at the Mini-Strat by Fender with a "hardwood" body and maple/rosewood neck, and a Johnson Mini-Strat-copy that's got an alder body and maple/rosewood neck. Both seem to be decent enough beginner guitars at under $100. He needs something to get his fingers around a little bit, plus going relatively cheap will be a good way to see if he really wants to learn how to play guitar or not.
Can anyone suggest any other 1/2 to 3/4 scale models that might fit the bill for my future little Satchmo?
Thanks
....Bob

Re: A guitar for my kid

ive played those little strats, a friend of mine just got one for his niece. we checked out the 3 they had and picked the best one, walked up to the counter and said "id like this for $100 tax included" it was tagged at $99.99 and we have a 8.25% tax rate here so it was a little bit of a deal but, ya know, never pay retail.
guitar center is always good for a deal.

Thanks for the reply, Jeremy. Are you referring to the Fender mini or the Johnson?
