A lefty's dilema : CS w/ SSL ?

Instead of SSL-1L, SSL-1L RWRP, SSL-5L how would a set of CS Fat 50's go with the SSL-5L in my Am. Strat.? I can get a decent deal on a set of lefty calibrated CS '50's and the SSL-5L is easy to get for bridge. I'm not against the 'preferred' set but I have the lefty thing, which makes it a bit harder to buy. Over-all would there be much difference?(Maybe better?) I'm into the Clapton / Skynyrd stuff. Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

IMO, a LH set of Fender Fat Fifties or Custom '54 single coils would be fine as it comes. I have the '54s in an alder/maple bitsa Strat. The bridge PU has higher output than the other two. (Obviously, not as high as an SSL-5.)

To be honest, I have never seen aftermarket Fender Custom Shop pickup sets with a LH magnet stagger pattern. The Seymour Duncan pickup that I would like to recommend - the Five-Two - also seems to be unavailable LH.

Well, a local dealer says he has the full set of the 50's left-handed.I have not seen them to verify. I'm considering those but not using the CS bridge PUP and using a SSL-5 lefty in its place (for just a little more a**). It seems like it might be a pretty good set. The Fat 50's claim a very nice chimey tone, great for chords,I play leads and the SSL-5 claims to favor a little bit more dirt. I have a full set of lefty lil '59's in it now, they're pretty darned good, just looking for a change. Any-one see where this set would /would not be as good as the SSL-1, SSL-1 SSL-5 set? I'm still pricing a full set of SSL's ,they are available. Thanks

SSL-1 set is all you need for a good true stratocaster tone - you can always upgrade bridge pup to SSL-5 if needed, but I would leave SSL-1 bridge

Stef,Thanks for the reply. Do you mean stick with the full set of CS Fat 50's( as opposed to a full set of SSL-1's, as you are recommending)?

Right, my bad on the lil "59's in my lefty Strat. Anyway, I'm considering the Fat 50's set (n & m) with the SSL-5L in the bridge,if the SSL-1L 's(n & m) prove to difficult to get. Any thoughts on that set-up? Thanks for the help.

Re: A lefty's dilema : CS w/ SSL ?

Hey Funkfingers, going by what you said that those Fat 50's may not be avail. in lefty, I just called the dealer. He claims that they came in on a trade, they have the left-handed stagger, but may not be the 50's, he's not sure what he has now. They run the local, annual guitar show and he's thinking he may have been been duped. Not looking too good on those. I couldn't find where they are made in lefty,,the dilema continues. Thx. for the info.

Re: A lefty's dilema : CS w/ SSL ?

If your American Stratocaster has the large, rectangular, so-called "swimming pool" pickup rout, there is enough room to mount a set of regular Fender Fat 50s Stratocaster pickups on the pickguard with their output cables facing towards the fingerboard instead of the bridge. This would make a set of RH pickups appear LH.

Get your pickguard up right away and take a look. Removing the four screws nearest to the low E string and loosening the two screws nearest the high E string should be enough.

I have SSL-1 pups in my stratocaster and that's why I recommend them! For all 3 positions..
