a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

shred me good

on rids rut situation that i saw in another thread im gona voice my limmeted experience. a new idea i have been developig recently.

i find for me there are two types of guitar playing. i play at home, i practice, i make riffs, i use a lot of theory and what comes out usualy sounds fine.

but ther is the other kind, i only expirience this when i go to my dads house, im there now, and this is rare. its what i feel music is more true to, how it was before people thought too mutch about it, the kind of abariginal use of instruments.
he plays with some realy wierd tuning that i have made a point of not knowing. i find tunes and ideas only through trial and error, and remembering that this is how music thory originated, you just play what sounds good to you. i also watch and listen to what he dose, and atempt to coppy it and change it. together we learn quite quickly.

my point is that the second kind is by far the better. it is the main part of my relationship with my dad and it is totaly diferent from anything i can reproduce anywhere else than when im with him.
it provides huge inspiration and has yet to fail to bring me out of a rut.

perhaps you could try to play the guitar how you have never thought to use it, then when you play it normaly you can use the ideas you experimented with. as if music theory didnt exist. i think they must have missed somthing when they invented music theory, and one day, only by experimenting, we may discover it.

what do you think?

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

playing with other musicians (with your dad in this case) is always better for your musical awareness, not neccessary theory, but it makes you a better player nonetheless.

i found out i cant play worth **** at home and you see my recordings always have some mistakes in them. it's cos i cannot make myself play alone. when i was playing in my friends band (even if only briefly and on a couple of band practices) it was better, more .. how to say.. casual, relaxed. even if you make mistakes (small, big, doesnt matter) they somehow dont mean the same as when you play alone and you move on. and play for playings sake

to end.. i agree with you =)

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

I simply miss being able to play along with my stereo...my practise amp is out of the house...doh and playing without a small amp is simply no fun;)
At home I play slide, alternate tunings, acoustic, so I am getting a Vox Tonelab for my birthday.
Then I can play at normal levels, that would be awfully nice.

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

have you ever thought of the line 6? i prefer that to tonelab
it's more versatile!

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

I like the sound of the Tonelab better than any of the Line6 things I have heard.....somehow the Tonelab has that fat thing I prefer, more headroom I guess?
As for versatile...hehe does not bother much with that...I hate too many options as it is;)
Allthough I like the clips done with Line6 stuff, I just do not like playing through one of those things...it is a annoying feel thing;)

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

i no what you mean! real fiddely until you get a sound you like!
but when you start discovering the great things you can do its a cooll tool!
im thinking of going for a line 6xt pro beceause of the ace effects.
some of the new effects like backwards delay (mutes the sound you make and plays it 1bar later but backwards!) can open up whole new playing style.

tell me about the tonelab.....

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

Hehe nah I had a huge rack in the 80's;)
I have had enough of "fun" effects:D
I'm back to more raw setups.....then I cannot cheat myself in any way.
Well the Tonelab just has that "right" ampsound when you use it.

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

fer enuf!
it seems that i am not yet sick of silly effects!
ill look out for a tonelab to play around on
cheers rid

Re: a new way of thinking, inspired by rid's rut!

My Boss ME-50 has that backwards delay thing.

I agree with Rid, Line 6 stuff, to me at least, just doesn't feel right somehow. The Valvetronix stuff is really nice sounding, more natural almost.

But on the topic of the thread, I get that feeling when I jam with my guitar teacher. Good times! :)
