A P-Rails, a Mean 90, a BB Pro, a 335, and a '51: What Goes Where?

ImmortalSix

John Mayer's Mankini
Guitars:
Epiphone Dot Studio 335 (HH)
Squier '51 (HS)

Bridge Humbuckers:
Gibson Burstbucker Pro
GFS Mean 90
Seymour Duncan P-Rails

Which bridge pickup would you put in which guitar?

At present, the '51 has the Mean 90 and the 335 has a matched par of Burstbucker Pros.

The P-Rails pickup arrives next week, and I have a Triple Shot ring planned to purchase once I decide which guitar to put it in.

Right now I am leaning towards putting the P-Rails into my '51. It already has a splittable Little '59 in the neck. With a Triple Shot, I'd have, uh,

Single coil bridge,
Humbucker bridge,
P90 bridge,
Single coil bridge with humbucker neck,
Humbucker bridge with humbucker neck,
P90 bridge with humbucker neck,
Single coil bridge with single coil neck
Humbucker bridge with single coil neck,
P90 bridge with single coil neck
Humbucker neck
Single coil neck

With the P-Rails in the 335, I'd have

Single coil bridge,
Humbucker bridge,
P90 bridge,
Single coil bridge with humbucker neck,
Humbucker bridge with humbucker neck,
P90 bridge with humbucker neck,
Humbucker neck

Of course, one is semi-hollow, 24.75, with a gigantic rosewood neck.

The other is Solid, 25.5, with a bat of a maple neck.

My lean is to keep the BB Pros in the 335 and put the P-Rails in my '51.

What do YOU think?

P-rails in the '51, and the BB or Mean 90 in the Dot Studio... P-rails just dont look good at all in a semi-hollow

Yes to P-Rail in '51.

Zoso, you sadden me. My Sheraton is now uglified by its appointments and I cry.

:(. I shouldnt have said "not good," but rather awkward maybe. I dunno, something just doesnt click in that combo to me. I'd love the tones to death, but something about the looks is just off though. Still an awesome axe none-the-less though dude

If it were me I'd leave the mean 90 in the '51 and put the p-rails in the Dot.

I'd put the P-Rails in the '51 and consider the Dot finished..

stick the mean '90 in the neck and p-rails into the bridge of the dot. that'd be a way badass guitar. and get another mean '90 for the tele:fingersx:

Re: A P-Rails, a Mean 90, a BB Pro, a 335, and a '51: What Goes Where?

The Dot's finished, IMHO. With the BB pair, the Dot can cover all the semi hollow tones out there and can even do a good impersonation of a Lester (my semi with 'buckers can, anyway).

Take the P Rails and slap it into the 51. It's a wannabe tele, get it some twang for the bridge, bro.

I think you, and all the 335 / BB Pro guys are right.

I think I'll put it in the '51, and just let the Mean 90 hang around.

I know what you mean, the off-set pole pieces on the P-90 side tweak something in the visual cortex that tells the brain "Somethin' ain't right with this picture." But the tones are good and you don't notice the "offness" of it while you're playing. From the audience the visual weirdness of the P-Rails isn't very noticeable...only up close. I'm no longer sad. :1:

Re: A P-Rails, a Mean 90, a BB Pro, a 335, and a '51: What Goes Where?

P-Rails in the 51 for sure. That would be a killer combo.

Sanford, I dig your Sheraton, but I bet it would look a LOT better with white P-Rails instead. Something about those black chunky things on a natural finish doesn't sit well with me.

Re: A P-Rails, a Mean 90, a BB Pro, a 335, and a '51: What Goes Where?

Yeah, I got the black set last year some time when I was a little more gung-ho about building a solid body. The guitar has yet to be built and I was itching to hear the P-Rails so I put them in the Epiphone. I used the cream pickup rings because the originals were black and to use them with the black pickups would have created a singularity. I figured San Antonio, as much as it tends to suck, didn't need any more help in that area.
