A prails in the neck of a 24 fret is hard to beat

I love the sound of a neck Strat pickup or a PAF in a 22 fret guitar but I feel like it doesn’t do it in a 24 fret guitar. I immediately remember what it’s “supposed to sound like” and miss it.

After going through a few pickups I’ve come to the conclusion that a PRails is a great choice in a 24 fret HH guitar. At least for me.

1) The P90 sound seems much more resilient to the neck position -There’s a YT video of someone rotating a prails in the neck and you can barely tell any difference in the P90 but the change in the rail is significant.

2) Being closer to the bridge makes it a bit less hot which is a common complain with the prails

3) The rail is perfect to do an “in between” sound with the other inside coil

4) If you have a HH 24 fret guitar chances are that you have a hot bridge pickup so you may be able to balance the output of the prails even in series

5) It takes magnets very well so you can shape the tone (and to a certain extent output) to your liking - I opened a thread asking for feedback and ended up with an A3/A4 combo that softens the P90 quite a bit and I really like.

I currently have it in my Strandberg with a custom/59 hybrid in the bridge and I’m really enjoying it. The sounds I use the most are P90 and the rails with the bridge inside coil but I’ve also used the series on occasion for solos.

The neck position in a 24 fret guitar is useless!!!!

24 frets ruin the neck tone!!!

There is no pickup that can save a 24 fret guitar!!!

There should be a law against 24 fret guitars having a neck position pickup!!!

Just kidding man. I'm glad you found something to enjoy the sound. I imagine most could if they tried.

Well, if you have a neck pickup in a 24 fret guitar a P-Rails is hard to beat there.

Lol what mincer said. I found myself with a 24 fret guitar and after a few tries landed on the prails. I think most applies to a p90 but the inside coils tone is very nice.

I think you hit the nail on the head on all counts.
P-Rail works great in the neck with the Rail coil toward the bridge. The P-90 coil is terrific next to the neck in a 24 fretter. And, certainly is open to many different magnet configurations.

What sort of switching options are you using with it? I bet that the rail side closest to the fretboard would sound best if you split the pickup. As would the P-90 being farther away.

I use P90, rail with the other inside coil and series. Parallel is great but I prefer P90 and I’m not a fan of just the rail on its own here.

I agree with the rail closer to the neck being great… on a 22 fret. On a 24 for the reasons above I think it’s better to have the rail closer to the other inside coil.
