Can anyone help me out with a suggestion of a set or just a bridge humbucker that would give a good punk rock/pop-punk/pop rock sound? I know the guitarist in blink 182 uses an Invader but other than that idk because im looking for the overall punk sound anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

A JB in the bridge is very good for alot of music genre. I'm sure it will be well suited for Punk/pop punk.

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

DiMarzio Super Distortion and Duncan JB are my usual suggestions.

Honestly though, any pickup will work. Just EQ the amp the way you want and play from the heart.

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

IF you dont find output to be important, a 59 or a P90 are great. IF output is an Issue, JB, Duncan Distortion, or Invader are all good. What kind of guitar do you have, body wood, neck wood?

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

I couldnt afford more than my Yamaha AES 820 its got two custom dimarzio pickups on it now which sound ok, but its not what im looking for. Maple Neck and Solid Alder Body Guitar Link As might as well I tell you i've only been playing guitar for a little less than a year now but everyone who has heard me play doesnt believe it in the least bit so i guess im fairly good for a beginner, but what does the wood the neck and body are made of have to do with the tone of the sound the guitar puts out?

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

if you're going for an overall punk sound you're not that punk

anyhoo, i play a lot of punk influenced stuff & i've had good results with '59s.

JB didn't have enough bottom end for me

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

The wood has a lot to do with the tone the pickups put out. They can make or break a guitar. i.e. a JB in a hunk of thick maple will probably be overly bright/icepicky.

I think a Distortion would be a bit OTT for what you're looking for. A JB might work, but you might find it overly bright. Maybe a Custom or Custom 5? Custom Custom would seem too creamy/middy for punk. How do you like to set up your EQ? If you like a bit of scooped mids, the Custom 5 might be the thing for you.

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

i know billie joe loves the p90's in his junior so thats always an idea. I use a hotrail in my strat and it works fine for distortion type style such as punk.

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

that argument has been going on for what's approaching 30 years now

why stop?

I should also add if you use in-amp tube distortion the 59 may be too mild, in which case I'd go for the c-5

then again i play pretty hard stuff, and it sounds like you're goin for the milder type...

Most blink 182 fans (including myself), went out and bought the Invader, to get that nice sound tom has, but believe me, if ya dont have a great amp, it dosent really preform that well. you get sick of the lack of distortion on it. Stick with something with a bit of meat.

are you saying the invader has a lack of distortion? i hope not because its a super hot pickup and used by many heavy metal bands. to the threadstarter, id go with a jb or a dd. The invader only works for blink 182 because of all there other equipment. you dont want an invader just for bright punk stuff if your playing through just an amp. For punk go with a pup thats bright with good distortion tone like the jb, dd, or cc.

I can nail blinks tone if i want to with my invader and my amp is not great, however i much prefere to roll back the treble and some gain and have a really midd-y and bass-y sound, as it contrasts brillaintly with my bandmates JB, sounds absolutely awesome having one guitar providing thick chunk and a lead guitar over it producing a more treble-y tone.

Basically pretty much any seymour duncan pickup can be used to play punk, as a punk rock sound can be pretty much anythign, maybe if you were a little more specific, do you want a high gain sound or low gain? Bass mids treb? a little more info could help us find exaclty what you are looking for.

Punk is so my scene, man. *Looking around for spiked bracelet*

:D

just kidding

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

Honsetly I'm looking for something wiht high gain, more treble than mid, more mid than bass, but still a decent amount of bass (i dont want there to be like no bass, that probably sound pretty crappy) I do like blink-182s sound but not so much that I wanna have a sound exactly like theirs or i would have just bought the invader, but also like the deeper tone my chemical romance uses in their new album, does that help?

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

I used to have a Screamin' Demon in my Epiphone Les Paul Jr. and I absolutley loved it. It's got a nice crunch to it with out being obnoxious. I tried the Invader in my Epi Korina Explorer and I just couldn't get used to it. Right now I've got DiMarzio Super Distortions in 2 of my guitars and they work for me.

I'd go Invader or JB then, the invader doesnt have more middle than treble, as its a very middy (some say muddy!) pickup, so i would probably go more for the JB than Invader. But saying that both will give you a big, high output sound, that can definately be used to make some great punk music.

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

Actually, all of the suggestions posted on here are good, or would be if your guitar could accomodate full sized humbuckers. If I'm not mistaken, your guitar is routed for P-90 sized pickups. That leaves you with limited options. My personal choice would be to get a pair of Duncan P-90 stacks or perhaps a Vintage P-90 in the neck and a Custom in the bridge.

Dimarzio also makes P-90 replacements like the ones you already have in there, along with versions of their Super Distortion in a P-90 size.

Re: A punkrock/poprock sound...?

i hate punk rock , rock pop , pop rock , punk pop , anything with the word punk or pop , what you need to do is start listening to some "and justice for all" or some black sabbath , and get a set of dd/59
