A question about JTM45 and 1987xl

Re: A question about JTM45 and 1987xl

well, lots of clapton's early cream stuff/bluesbreakers material was recorded/gigged using the BLUESBREAKER combo, so if you like dirty screaming marshall style clapton the JTM 45 is the ticket.

Do you still play alot of SRV? I figure the JTM 45 would cover an in your face blues tone much better than the 1987xl.
I agree with this. I am more of a classic hard rock player, and that's one reason I prefer the 1987x. Both are nice amps, just different.

By the way, I heard a live version of SRV doing Little Wing.. the Marshall tone was awesome.. lots of breakup, and very different than the studio version, but I could really hear the Hendrix connection there..

I find this very interesting, maybe that's why I liked the tone of Stevo's so much. More aggressive tone.

Yeah. It's definitely a cross between an early 800 series in voicing and a plexi 50 watt. That 1973 circuit is just a beast and my fave Marshall sound.. smooth, but not too compressed and has lots of marshall high end "sparkle" like only a NMV can get. Since I play alot of late 70's and 80's hard rock/metal it's perfect. I've been able to nail a "brown sound", classic 70's Thin Lizzy, UFO era Michael Schenker, Adrian Smith's tone on Live after Death, Mathias Jabs' tone, etc. And the cleans are great too (if ya like Marshall cleans that is... I do).

I prefer it over a plexi tone/gain structure ...which is not as agressive and a little..hmm..mushy(?)..for lack of a better term.

But I love ALL the classic Marshall tones: I love the JTM...I love a plexi, the handwired 18's, the 800 series. Once the 900 series came into being Marshall lost something...the tone "magic", I guess. Newer Marshall's just do NOT sound the same. They may sound good in their own right, but they are not the same.

Well, I listened to the VOodoo V- Plex clips, although it sounds pretty damn good, doesn't sound like the tone im looking for, sounds way too.... trebly and hardcore and compressed, im looking for a very fat not so in your face tone...

Re: A question about JTM45 and 1987xl

**** Post resurrection! **** I use both, because I love the JTM45 for chime and rhythm (Bassman) sounds and the 50 watt Plexi for the fatter mids for leads. If I had to choose between one... I don't know... I guess I would be practical and choose the extra watts to ensure clean headroom with the Plexi... but I would really miss the Chime of the JTM45.
