Is there a way to transmute a set of nickle covered pickups into "gold" cover pickups? I'm serious and a cheapskate, don't want to spend $40 on new covers.

short answer yes

Put off the covers, take out the screws and post them here in trade section. There is somebody out there who want to do the reverse for sure.
