A question for the tele experts

Hello,
Making plans for my next build, wanna a cheap tele, thats not routed under the pickguard, I plan to change out pickups, and tuners, repaint, and use no pickguard. I prefer rosewood fret boards, and non basswood bodies. Operative word is cheap. Older Squire, and clones OK. No Chinese, No Indonesian,
Korea OK. Any ideas ? Anybody had any experience with a Fender Aerodyne Tele ?

Re: A question for the tele experts

Pretty much ALL Teles are routed under the pickguard. Every Squier (and both the MIM's) I've ever seen has has the "swimming pool" for the neck pup. I've never seen a "real" Esquire (like actual 50's) under the guard, but I'd guess they have neck pup routs too. To get one only routed for the bridge pup, look for a "La Cabronita" body, but that'll be routed for a Gretsch-style bucker (smaller than a P90). You may have to go custom to get just what you want.

You will have to go custom for no routing under the pickguard - warmoth or similar who give options.

Yes , Sounds like the Esquire body is the way to go , I already have a humbucker template, I am planning on both bridge and neck. Do you know if a standard humbucker template would cover the existing Gretsch Route?

Thanks

They do. Fender simply omitted the second pickup and the cut-out for it in the pickguard then charged slightly fewer Dollars.

TV Jones offers a "conversion" bridge that permits a Filter'Tron sized pickup to be installed on a regular Telecaster without leaving the new rout exposed - even if you later convert back to the standard T single coil.

Reverse engineering this idea, it should be possible to make the small alterations to the pickup rout of a La Cabronita Especial body and then disguise the entire cavity beneath a modern, machined bridge.

First, catch your budget LCT body.

BTW, those MIK Squier set neck "mahogany" Teles were pretty weighty.

I'm going to ignore most of your stipulations, beggars can't be choosers.

It even has a rad star on the neck!

They're basswood, and won't come cheap unless they're really trashed.

On a side note, one Tele that does come without a wire route are the paisleys

Another simple way to go is this: (actually Billy Gibbons owns one which is where I found out about it)

Wow, I've never seen that. Must be an earlier version of the FMT HH Tele. I like them, but the bodies are rather thin mahogany, so they've not real full sounding guitars.

All Esquires have the neck route. IN FACT, back in the '50s Fender used to sell a kit to upgrade your esquire with a neck pickup.

I strongly suggest a TV Jones in the neck of that guitar. I had this TV Jones Classic + Bridge pickup floating around without a home and decided to try it in the Tele. It totally changed the guitar. I can get really nice hard rock dirty rhythm tones out of the guitar and the pickup also sounds "sweet" on leads.

Re: A question for the tele experts

Thanks guys for your input, I have another question. Do the 60's reissue MIM telecaster have the swimming pool routing as well?

Re: A question for the tele experts

Just remember you get what you pay for. I thought I'd get a unfinished body on eBay and finish it myself. Got this body for less than fifty bucks. Good deal right? It has great grain, super tight neck pocket, but the drilling was off so the low E is almost off the fretboard and the ferrule holes arnt even close to being straight or even. Here is a pic.
