A recording from my Rolling Stones tribute band

Re: A recording from my Rolling Stones tribute band

That's a damn fine effort. If I could offer up two things...bring the tempo back 5 bpm. The original is around 125 bpm and you guys are up around 130. Taking off that extra 5 bpm (which, incidentally, is probably much slower than they do it themselves live...but they're allowed to!) will give it back its original swagger. Also, just have a quick listen to the bog standard rock'n'roll figures Keef is playing between the vocal lines in the verses, at the point where you're just holding chords and letting them ring. Grab some of those, they really make those verses move along. But you're making a great contribution to the band, your tone is really working, and it'll be a crowd pleasing act. Good work.

Cheers...................................... wahwah

You guys nail the stones vibe pretty well. Definitely the Keef tone! I've heard sooo many stones recordings, session outtakes, a hundred or so live bootlegs, and I've been to 7 live shows over the years. I've been a stones fan for about 21 years LOL.

I'd like to hear the lead guitar on the left a little brighter and with a little more gain/sustain. Just a little.

Good job and thanks, this brightened my day a little. It's refreshing to both see people who are enthusiastic about the stones and see people get a band and do good covers.

also, you've got a good list of gear. What'd you use on this recording, if you don't mind?

We're actually working from the live version that the Stones do. I'm a HUGE fan and there's certain songs where the live versions are better than the recorded (IMHO). I like this one a bit fast - keeps the energy up. Listen to the live recording off Flashpoint - that's what we're going for.

If you can believe it, I'm playing straight through a 73 Champ with no effects. The guitar is a Tele using the bridge pickup (SD Broadcaster). The mic is just a 57 running into a Mackie mixer. There's only 2 mics on the drums!

Being a huge fan, I too have been horrified by some of the recordings from tribute bands I've heard and seen online. I demand that we sound authentic.

Thanks guys, your comments really mean a lot. I'm very fortunate to have a great group of musicians working in this project. Actually, the guy I'm most impressed with is my bassist! I haven't paid much attention until I started mixing the demos and he really nails that Bill Wyman style.

I should note that our singer isn't even trying to ape Mick Jagger. He's a blues vocalist and his style meshes very well with what we're doing. We really were just looking for someone who can sing well rather than someone who sounds or looks like Jagger. Bonus is that he plays harmonica VERY well.
